Project Winter Wheels
Here's an update finally. I've had a pretty busy summer! I've got some down time though now.
I got all four wheel lips polished. Not perfect but pretty good.

I also located some Plasti-dip after quite the hunt. I figured I'd give it a try. These are winter wheels and I'm not trying to get them perfect. Just something fairly cheap and easy that looks good for a few months.
I tested the plasti-dip on the center cap and it came out pretty sweet. Can't wait to see what the whole wheel will look like. I'm taking the wheels and tires to the shop tomorrow to get mounted and balanced before I dip them.

I found mine at Menards. You can get it an Lowes too.
I was going to take the wheels to get mounted today, but I had a loooong day at work. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have time to get them mounted.

I am very intrigued by plasti dip and the pretty cool things i've seen done on here by fellow members. Im thinking about getting a can to just mess around with and just see how it goes. Now you guys that are doing entire wheels like mike(03jgmonte) i assume you're taping and spraying and not actually dipping? Excuse my stupidity but im curious :p
if you do your wheels i was told 3 to 4 cans will do the job i was also to told if you dont want your rims black any more a good power wash it will come wright off so im going to give it a try my self

Very easy to do. I actually did all four of my wheels one only one can
For about $6 it's totally worth it IMO just remember to start with a really light tack coat for best results
Good call on waiting to plastidip them until tires are mounted. I have a friend who had new tires mounted on his already dipped rims and they messed it up a lot. Not on purpose of course lol.

Progress!
I got two of the wheels dipped tonight before dark. Here's how I did it.
Newly mounted and balanced wheel..

Here is my trick - I used vinyl tape to get a perfect tape line. The vinyl tape is very flexible and forms easily making it tape a circle pretty easily. I then followed with some news paper and painters tape to keep off overspray.

I sprayed about 3 coats on wet-on-wet. So basically I sprayed on three coats one after another so there was no dry time. You have to do this to keep the dip wet in order to get a good tape line. If you let the dip dry, the dip will peel off with the tape. But if you peel the tape off while the dip is wet you can get a good tape line.

Center caps..

To get the silver back on the bowtie.. allow the dip to dry and then scratch the dip off to get it started, then peel it off. It will separate at the line around the bowtie and come off in one piece very easily.
An idea how they will look on my car

Now to finish the other two :p
I'm digging the look!! I think they go great with the black and chrome theme I kinda have going on.
