New Shocks - $2,740
Do you think this is a good deal - I called the Chevy dealer and asked for an estimate on a set of four shocks/struts for a 1996 Lumina. Their quote - $1,700 front, $948 rear and $89.95 to re-align. Of course I said "Hell yea - lets' do it. Can you change the oil and rotate the tires for an extra couple hundred?". Service advisor said - the front struts are expensive - they are a complete unit - $600 each side. $500 to install. Are these guys on crack? Monroe is currently offering a $50 rebate on Sens-a-trac shocks struts. Front cartridges - $80/pr (insert into shock tower - no strut replacement), rear struts - $108/pr. Less $50 rebate means I'd pay $138 to do it myself. Idiots.

Those guys are morons. The front struts have inserts that you replace. You dont replace the whole unit unless you physically break the structure of the strut.
Just buy some Monroe sensa-tracs or some KYB GR2s and do it yourself. Be sure to get strut mounts on all four corners as well. Its not rocket science to replace them. The rears are easy as pie. The fronts can be done in car with a special tool, but if you dont have the tool, you can remove the entire strut assembly and do it off car.
