So I am just about fed up with this front end suspension noise! I'm going to reach out one more time before I say screw it and take it to a shop.

(there is also a squeaking sound while going over bumps that i haven't recorded)
and some other issues I replaced my Wheel Hub, CV axle, Control Arm, Sway Bar end links and now today the outer tie rod. All of those parts had torn or worn bushings/boots and were in need of replace. After doing the tie rod today I thought I had it down, No sound what so ever while sitting still or driving. However after about 25 miles the sound returned and is continuing to become more pronounced.

Inner tie rod checks good as far as I can tell so my next thought is the strut bearing? would this cause the sounds I have been hearing, The more I think about it the more it makes sense to me. I shot in some WD-40 from the top and bottom of the strut but I haven't driven since. I didn't hear the noise from a stand still though. Would the WD-40 be a good trouble shooting process and would it grease the bearing by doing this?

Any help and Ideas would be appreciated.

 

That is unsettling sounding. Is the strut bearing seized? That's what I'm thing too...

 

Dave, it sound to me like a strut bearing or steering column. Have you tried getting someone else to turn the wheel while you walk around the car listening for where the noise is coming from?

 

It sounds to me like either the upper (most likely) or lower insulator in the strut assembly has worn out.

 

Sound is coming from front left wheel well. Thats all I could get beacuse it doesnt make the sound when the car is Jacked up. The more I think about it the more it make sense the strut bearing. That would cause no is going over bumps too?

 

Can I do this with the struts still on the car? I should be able to just lock the springs in a compressed state, jack up the car and remove the upper strut mount correct?

 

Hey David... I had kind of a similar sound when my strut mounts were going... Had all 4 replaced when I did my struts and springs... One in the rear left actually got to the point of making a klunking sound (like a full tool box bouncing in the back)... Hope you can get to the bottom of this... Good luck...

 

Thanks damien, im going to keep soaking to top end in WD 40 and see if that fixes the issue as a temporary thing. Till it warms up enough to do the strut bearing.

 

You should be able to remove the struts as one whole assembly to get to the strut mounts right? I did all four on my daughters 02 Malibu, did not need to compress anything. Removed the mounting bolts and off they came coil springs struts and all., strut mounts were then exposed. Hopefully it's the same on our Monte's.

 

Im still a little unsure about how the struts work... I feel like they still had potential energy in the springs With the car jacked up and the wheel off.
