chipping paint off car, leave original primer?
I'm chipping all the original paint off my white '98 Monte Carlo since
it's going to chip off eventually anyway. The putty knife is making quick
work getting the original paint off and leaving the primer. My question,
the original primer, should I just sand that and reprime over that
or take it to bare metal first?
I'm trying to do this inexpensively; the car isn't worth a pricey paint job.
There's been large sheets of paint chipping off lately and some rust in spots
to deal with. Any low cost solutions for painting this, products etc.

If it were mine I would probably sand it down to the Primer, then re primer the thing and then apply the new paint. I hate doing the clear coat so you may want to check at a Body shop and see what they will do after you have the surface painted.
Check youtube to see if there are any videos on repainting.
I saw something on the Velocity Channel the other day about painting I think it was called auto touchup dot com but I can't remember for sure. If I find it I will put it here for you. You might google it and see what comes up.

Thanks for the reply drivernumber3 and suggestion to keep the original primer.
I've searched all over youtube looking at videos, but nobody talks about taking the paint off
with a putty knife and leaving the original primer. The video's that are out there
usually have a car not missing paint .where they can sand and immediately paint and
not worry about paint chipping off from underneath.
These old Chevy's, especially the "white" ones, with the paint chipping off are on the
road with lots of paint missing. Mine is one of them.
Unless I get some other advice / replies, my plan is to continue chipping the white paint down to
the primer, then sand, put about 3 light coats of primer on it, sand then paint. It'll look better and
be protected for some more years of travel. I hope I can find someone to do the final paint
and clear coat but may have to resort to doing that myself too.
