The paint on our engine cover is almost gone. The "3800 Supercharged" is almost all gray" What is usually used to paint the letters that will both stay on plastic and hold up to the heat. Thank you

 

I had some high heat caliper paint left so I used that to redo the stripes on my Supercharged cover. I think for the reg 3800 engine cover, I used touch up paint because it was such a small area.

 

I don't think heat is really a big issue - at least on the letters. I just used regular touch up when painting the letters. The rest of the cover I used engine enamel. PFYC.com sells vinyl decals for the lettering and lifetime warranty it. If vinyl (and its adhesive) can hold up to the heat then I think anything could. I used pinstripping on the ribs, then sealed it with engine clear coat over top.

Only 1 questions, In your opinion, what colors would you choose for the stripes, 3800, and supercharged? Its a dale Jr edition. They don't show the colors together on the site so its kinda hard to decide, lol We were thinking all black for the letters and stripes so it sorta mocks how the car is painted

 

Well, if you have a Jr edition and you paint your cover red you can do the stripes and lettering in Black, but in JuniorCar's cover it looks like he used gold for the lettering (which looks awesome BTW) and Black w/white surround for the stripes.

I used ordinary 1/4" white pinstripping on the first layer, the 1/8" black on the second layer. Krazy glued a beer cap to a m6 nut to finish it off

 

just out of curiosity, how difficult is it to put the decals on? they're sort of expensive and i'm afraid to put them on crooked and mess them up.

How would regular car paint hold up? My boss is going to be repainting my rear bumper to take care of a few deep scratches that were there when I bought it so he will have the matching paint and could spray the cover with the excess and a some clear if its alright under the hood. Then it would be the exact color and I can get the decals when I get the cash

I know the plastic would have to be prepped for non plastic paint, I'm just not sure how, lol Any pointers

Car paint will hold up just fine. One thing i learned from an old mechanic was if your engine gets to the point that it damages your paint, the paint will be last thing you need to worry about. LOL

As far as the plastic, just wash it real well with Dawn dish washing liquid. Let it dry well and then spray on some Plastic Adhesion Promoter ( I personally use Bulldog from Kleenstrip ). Just MIST it on, wait about 10 mins, then shoot on your color.
