Your $0.02 Worth

I found a black'01 SS Monte for sale. The car is pretty much loaded including sun roof with about 60,000 miles on it.

The seller has mentioned several times, "What would you be willing to give for the car?"

I told him I wanted to see the car up close and take it for a test drive first. And Ialso told himsome information he disclosed will definately affect the selling price. Which is............

The car was involved in an accident. He said the car had repairs to the pass front fender. But also to the "A" pillar.

I know depending onwho did the repairs they could be decent repairs and the car could be a good one for many miles. I did thankthe sellerfor being honest with me as I know not everyone always is.

A guy I work with said he wouldn't give more than $3k for the car. What do you guys think on price?

I'm not sure what kind of money the seller is actually looking to get out of this car? Of course like all of us, the most we possibly can.

He may not agree to a $3k selling price? But then again he just might? You never know?

And he keeps asking me what I would give for it so it sounds like the ball is in my court.

R.J.,
If you can buy an 01 Monte SS that runs with
only 60K miles,for around $3K, it's a deal of a lifetime.
I would check it `out really good, but I think it would
be a Super/Super Deal....4-Sure
The below Monte is only

i'd be worried about what else may be wrong.. if he damaged any fo the front end underbody parts... that thing may never run right again.

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

See if the seller would be willing to let you test drive it for say, 24 hrs. and take it to your trusted body shop. They'll be able to tell you if the repairs were done right or not. Really, A-Pillar damage tells me that it was either rolled, hit by a large vehicle, or the accident was a pin-in and the fire dept. had to do a partial roof cut-off. However, if it was the latter of the three, insurance would have totaled the car. So ask if it is a rebuild title or salvage title or not. I wouldn't pay more than $5k for it....$3k is still low, even if it was in an accident.

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

I'd do the due diligence as suggested by others. You need to KNOW why he's UNLOADING this car for a Fire Sale Price. Either something is wrong or something might very soon go wrong. Once you buy it ... you own it! You are going to get a good deal or you are going to be the guy with no place to sit when the music stops. 50/50.

If you can wrench and know body work. Sounds like a good deal.
If you are going to rely on the talent of others to get any kinks worked out.
Take a pass.
The 3-Grand you save this week will be good money on a car with no skeletons in the closet!

Is there a lemon law where you are? Here in MA, if the car doesn't pass inspection immediately, or undergoes a problem more than once, then the dealer is required by law to buy it back. It's a nifty little law.

Lemon laws don't apply to vehicles that were in accidents. Especially if the title on this car is a rebuild or salvage title. If he bought it and it had problems he could try to say he didn't know about the accident, but as soon as GM does a VIS or even a carfax, it's all out into the open.

rj 04-17-2008 11:42 AM

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

I asked the seller, if the car's been involved in an accidet is it under a salvage t-i-tle? He said the t-i-tle is clear.

So that's a plus.

I too thought about asking to borrow it for 24 hours and driving straight to my favorite body shop to see what they say about the car?

As for wrenching on the car, that's no problem. I'm not fond of having to "Attempt" to work on newer cars but it can be done.

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

Well then here is what I would do. DOUBLE check the title with your secretary of state, just because he said its clear doesn't mean anything...If it is clear, that means that the A-Pillar damage was minimal and I would DEFINITELY take it to your body shop and have them look at it...A weld is only as strong as the welder...and bondo a lot of times is a body shop's best friend instead of replacing the damaged part...I don't believe that but insurance companies sure do. :o) If everything checks out okay and your body shop gives you the thumbs up, I would offer $4000 and see where he goes from there...Go to your local GM dealership with a VIN and have them run a VIS check and make sure the mileage is accurate and what kind of work has been done on the car while under warranty.

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

Who enters the data about a car's history into CarFax? And, ... don't you need to pay to check?

rysZ34 04-17-2008 02:48 PM

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

I am not sure who enters the information in for Carfax, but yes, you will need to pay for a report. If you do a VIS check at a dealership, it is free. I'm not sure how much information after the car is out of warranty a VIS check has though. I know it can verify mileage. The best thing would to check with the secretary of state on the status of the title.

RJ, if you want to know how to do a ¢ sign, just hit Alt0162
I was kind of bored and looked it up on the net.:D

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

I still plan on looking the car over tomorrow. And the seller sent another email asking if I was coming? So I responded I was.

I definately want to find out about the "A" pillar repair. Cause that's going to be a weak selling point on the car. Last thing I want is a car that's more trouble then it's worth.

And stopping at the Chevy dealer and asking them to look up the history of the car is a real good idea.

Dave. Thanks for the Alt0162 info. I tried it twice and it didn't work for me?

So what's the deal with the Monte? Yay or nay? :)

rj 04-20-2008 12:27 AM

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

Well, at this point (long story here) it's a nay.

We were headed over to look at the car yesterday. Something happened that changed everything.

So I contacted the seller and told him I was not interested in the car.

some happened? hope everything is alright!

rysZ34 04-20-2008 06:09 PM

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

Yeah I hope everything is alright too...It is probably a good choice though...My mom and step dad bought my younger sister a '95 Cavalier witha rebuild title...Air Bags were re-packed by the repair person or place...(not sure who did the work) She hit a fuel gas truck that pulled out in front of her and did a number on the Cav, thankfully she wasn't hurt at all, and her bags didn't deploy. (I responded to the accident w/the fire dept.) When my step dad started to rebuild the car (the other insurance company paid out pretty well per that state's insurance laws) he saw the wires for the air bag sensor, but no sensor...it has one now though. All this to say, you never know what is wrong with the car.

rj 04-22-2008 11:47 AM

RE: Your $0.02 Worth

Well.............. I talked my father into going with me yesterday and I went to look at the car.

First they weren't expecting me and I couldn't find the car? It was in the service area getting an exhaust leak fixed. I was told someone drove the car on saturday and complained about the leak so they were fixing it.

Icouldn't drive the car or even hear it run with it setting on the lift back there.

And I noticed the service tech lifted the car against the SS body kit. Damaged paint and not too good overall on the plastic kit parts in general.

I think the sales guy was thinkingthat Iwas thinking.... "And the price goes down."

But he said he would contact me when the car was ready so I can come back and look it over better plus maybe drive it?
