Ford Triumphs in X Games Rallycross

Forty years ago I attended my first rallycross event in the UK where I witnessed three 4WD Ford Capris compete side by side. They didn’t win that event but I was hooked on rallycross and all-wheel-drive.

Fast forward to this weekend when rally cars took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles as an important part of ESPN’s X games 17 extravaganza. It was heartening to see two major streets closed off and see 500+ horsepower AWD rally cars slide through corners, some on dirt laid down over the pavement. Although nobody seems to be able to confirm this – it appears to be the first ever rallycross held on city streets anywhere in the world.
Everyone expected the winners for the timed Rally event, which had just two cars on track at the same time, or the Rallycross final with eight cars going head to head would be from one of the factory teams. Ford took the Gold medals in the past two X Games rally events so they were firm favorites. Subaru looked stronger than they had in rallycross events held earlier this year. Hyundai in its first appearance was also in with a chance with its Rhys Millen prepared Velostars.

Imagine then the surprise when British rallycross sensation Liam Doran took the Rally Gold on Saturday in a Citroen C4, firmly beating Marcus Grönholm in the Best Buy Ford Fiesta. David Higgins took the Bronze in a Subaru WRX STI.
There were plenty of spins and bodily contact in the practice sessions and elimination rounds on Sunday for the Rallycross final. The track was entirely lined with concrete barriers so there was no room for error. Half of the course, past the lone spectator grandstand and around the joker lap jump, was so tight that there was no room for passing. Consequently the winner in each round was usually the one who out dragged their competitors into the first corner. After that there was little chance to gain a place unless someone spun or clipped a barrier.

There was plenty of excitement as the eight cars that made it through eliminations fired up on the start line. Ironically non-paying spectators, who were allowed on sidewalks on several parts of the track, had the best view as Tanner Foust, the only American competing in the European rallycross championship, and Liam Doran drag-raced their way into the first corner. They touched and Doran spun as they went into the corner and Brian Deegan, who took the Silver medal in the past two X Games, snuck past. With a clear path in front of him he easily went on to take the win for the Gold. Tanner Foust took the Silver and Marcus Grönholm was a surprised Bronze winner as he had been trailing Travis Pastrana’s Subaru WRX until the finish. Ford Fiestas had a clean sweep of the podium.
In truth Pastrana had proven to be the crowd and TV favorite of the whole event. He had broken his right foot in a motocross fall on Thursday. He had to cancel his NASCAR race on Saturday but he was determined to compete in the Rallycross event. Subaru mechanics hooked up a paddle-controlled throttle system on the steering wheel and Pastrana had his leg taped to the transmission tunnel so it would not fly around. After a few practice laps he quickly got up to speed. Unfortunately in the heat of the race he inadvertently pulled on the throttle paddle as he entered a corner and crashed just half a lap from the finish.

Needless to say Pastrana’s dramas made for great TV and that was, after all, what the whole event was about. Compared to last year’s events in the Coliseum this year’s races on LA’s streets were tremendous. Let’s hope it continues as an annual event. Who knows it could become as well known as that other street race that started 36 years ago on the streets of Long Beach, barely 15 miles south of Los Angeles
.
We must stay informed & know what's going on in the
Automotive World...Post your thoughts on above

Over the years, Ken Block has treated us to a wide variety of high-octane [COLOR=blue] action, having competed in plenty of racing disciplines that has earned him the title as one of the most versatile racers in the world today.
Having had experience with the WRC, Rallycross, and Gymkhana, Block has likewise driven plenty of , each unique to its own depending on the where he is racing at a particular time.
But all that’s about to change with the introduction of the new Ford Fiesta RS WRC HFHV. If you don’t know, ’HFHV’ stands for ’Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle’, which pretty much explains what the car is all about. It’s a modified Ford Fiesta that has been tweaked and reconfigured in such a way that it fits right in on all three racing items Block competes in.
At the heart of this versatile machine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine that produces 600 horsepower and 665 lb/ft of torque mated to a six-[ sequential manual gearbox. Anytime Block and his team need to change the specs of the car, they only need to add and subtract a few elements of the car.
Read more about this versatile vehicle after the jump.

At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Ken Block was presented with two racing carsthe Gymkhana Three Ford Fiesta and the current Ford Fiesta RS WRC car. Defending the "hooning title" he won in 2010, Block spent the entire weekend sideways or in circles on Goodwood’s hillclimb and rally stages. This video was then released so we could all partake in the mad skills Block illustrated.
The Gymkhana Three Fiesta is powered by a boosted 2.0-liter fourcylinder that delivers an impressive 850 HP (de-tuned to a total of 650 HP in the name of tractability) and 660 pound-feet of torque. With this amount of power under the hood, the Fiesta will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 2 seconds, providing the very reason why Block felt it necessary to have at it during the festival. Enjoy!
