Can't see pick-ups going away. REALLY can't see farmers hauling cows with a Prius... would be interesting to watch though. My guess is we'll see a lot more engine options to help with the average.

I also don't think trucks will ever fade away in our lifetime, but I'd love to see the auto companies bring back trucks like the Chevy El Camino, Ford Ranchero, etc.

With a 3.6 Direct Injection V6 etc that will get super MPG's & still have power... A sports truck for boating/camping/surfing/fishing etc...or household items.....I love a ride with a bed 4-Sure...

What has gone on with the pickup truck has much to do with government meddling in the automobile industry. The White House has said that the U S needs an energy policy. To date they have done nothing except put it on the back of the big three by demanding they build more fuel efficient vehicles. The politicians then pat themselves on the back saying they have done a good job. The Obama administration has done more of the same.

If you look at the history of the pickup truck, from the early 1900's until the early 1980's pickup truck buyers were mostly used in commercial ventures. I include farming as commercial. As Detroit started eliminating the rear drive cars and station wagons for front wheel drive econoboxes that didn't handle and were underpowered, American families started buying pickup trucks and Suv's in droves as these had the familiar rear drive handling and powerful engines. The liberal tree huggers have taken notice and the pickup truck and Suv are now in their cross hairs and if they have their way, these vehicles will fade into extinction.

The big three have just about walked away from the compact truck market leaving it to Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. Honda's truck is loosely based on the El Camino. Nissan And Toyota compact trucks have grown from their original versions. I have noticed that many of the Suv's have moved from truck chassis' to car. I think light duty pickup trucks will do the same and then fade away.there will always be a need for pickup trucks and they will always be around. Future pickup trucks will have a hefty gas guzzler tax affixed and the government will be happy. They will be even happier when we all go back to horse and buggy as our modes of transport.

The government has tried to force electric cars down our throats. The GM EV1 was a failure. The Chevy Volt that Obama and the tree huggers have said is the greatest thing and the next chapter for the automobile is getting close to be written off as a failure as well. As of now they are sitting in Chevrolet showrooms collecting dust. The Obama administration is manipulating the price of gas upward to try to boost sales.

As a side note to this post, if you like what is going on here then in the fall vote democrat. If you don't then vote republican. Either way we give up our rights. The democrats leave our personal rights alone as to our relationships but force their tree hugger view down our throats. Republicans want to restrict our personal rights (woman's issues, gay rights, family planning) but lets big business and the rich do as they please. If this is what you want then vote republican. Either way research the issues and get out and vote. Personally I don't like either choice. I will however still vote.

I have to disagree with the EV1 being a failure. GM killed that car. The public WANTED it.

Man I hate being @ work, 99.5% of pics don't show up!

What is the Blue truck (only one I can see) in your post Space??? Agree if GM would import the Holden Ute as an El Camino I think a lot of people would want one. I would love to have one but doubt if finances would allow.

Even in crew cab ???

Thanks Mod Mike for your post & I hope we don't have to get in2 politic's...., but on the MCF we can always
Agree to Disagree...Remember, the government is of the people, and for the people What ?

Recognize that there will be times that you will not agree with another person's views and opinions. Recognize, too, that disliking a person's opinion is different from disliking that person. Accept that his or her view is not yours, and move on.... I've moved on & looking forward to the auto companies or GM bringing back the El Camino

The people want a lot of things that they don't want to work for ? I hope that changes in our future, & if they don't, there may not be a future ? What ? LOL, sorry 2 much SpaceCoffee 2day...Peace/out from `Space...

Mike I agree with you that GM killed the car because they didn't want to support it. I saw the movie. The car had very few numbers and the program was initiated by the federal government and the state of California. Many of the people that had the EV1 wanted to keep it however most of the public didn't want one. It would not have been a commercial success if it was available for the masses. We are seeing the same thing now with the Volt. GM has fully backed the Volt and for the most part the consumer does not want it.

Space in order to have a government that is "of the people and by the people", the people have to get involved. Americans are comfortable and lazy. To keep a government as was set up by our forefathers we must stay involved. Currently our government is run by two parties and by the rich and special interests. If we don't stay involved we will loose the right to vote and control our government. Life styles as we currently know them will cease to exist because we refuse to stay involved.

This isn't written to offend anyone. I just urge all who read it to stay current on the issues and when it is time to vote, invest the time to do that.

I follow the rule: "Every family needs a pickup truck!". They come in handy frequently, not to mention are my choice for a winter driver over FWD. Drop 500 pounds in sand bags in the back and I could drive that thing straight up a snow covered mountain.

It would take 15-20 years to get the truck out of American society. It is so ingrained in us. Americans are very resistant to change. It would take $7-8 a gallon gas to break us of our pick up trucks.

I even see hybrid pick up trucks in the future.

I agree that every family needs a truck. You never know when the hot water heater will break. You never know when your recliner is going to bust and need to be hauled off. You just never know. I might not need it for 3 months, I might need it every day next week.

And I just bought a 10 mpg truck....
