New York Driver Approaches 3,000,000 Miles in His '66 Volvo

Irvin Gordon, of Long Island, is the current Guinness Book of World Records holder for High Mileage Vehicle.

By Joshua Condon 4 hours ago

  • We've told you here of Million Mile Joe, the Maine resident who kept his meticulously maintained 1990 Honda Accord running through a whopping 1,000,000 miles. And while Joe was getting plenty of media attention as he approached that milestone (and a brand new Accord from Honda once he passed it) a New York man was quietly racking up even more miles -- almost 3,000,000 -- in a beautiful red 1966 Volvo P1800.

  • Irv Gordon, of Long Island, bought the Volvo new in June of '66 for $4,150 (for some, a full year's salary at the time). Since then Gordon, who has stated a lifelong love of travel, has been racking up the miles: it took 21 years to reach the first million miles, and another 15 to reach the two-million mark, according to MSNBC. Now, 46 years after purchasing the Volvo and already having driven the car the equivalent of 1,200 trips around the globe at the equator, Gordon is less than 40,000 miles from clicking "3,000,000" on the odometer.<!--EndofExcerptMarker-->

And did we mention, since he failed to spring for the option back in '66, Gordon has done all this driving without an air conditioner?

Regular maintenance, oil changes and tune-ups are key to the vehicle's longevity, of course, and the Volvo still has its original engine (albeit rebuilt -- twice). Perhaps Gordon's connection to the car is the secret? The 72-year-old recently told the Associated Press "It’s just a car I enjoy driving.”

At nearly 3,000,000 miles -- a number Gordon expects to hit this year -- we think that may be a bit of an understatement.

Wow, that's crazy.

My first car was an 87 Pontiac Trans Am, had 230,000 miles on the original 305 bottom end. Heads were rebuilt and transmission were rebuilt once each. That old beast was turn-key though, never gave me any problems.

Thanks guys for your post & one's a Chevy & ones a FORD.

It's going to be fun to see what other member's posts & who has the highest miles.

I wonder if older engine will last longer then the newer ones with all the smog emission stuff ? Time will tell

I seen on the web many 3.8L with over a half a million miles

My first car was a 95 Lumina with 190,000 on it before the headgaskets went and I didn't want to fix it anymore haha.

Now I have the Monte slowly approaching that number and soon to be my new highest.

Mod `Mike, I think you will be one of the few member's that will ever get close to the million mile mark in your Monte.
I will check back on the MCF in 2020 to see if you are there yet

My first car (truck) 1989 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the 5.7L now has 229K on it and it still runs awesome. (it's technically my Dad's truck).

My Monte is sitting at 163K, if it wasn't for the fact that I got a company car, i'd be driving it right now, and it would be at about 185K right now. I fully intended on driving the Monte till it stopped. Now i'm not sure if that will happen, as sitting tends to make them last forever. LOL. With 163K, my Monte runs just as good as the day I bought it brand new...It had it's first smog this year, and passed it WAY below average.

My 2003 Cavalier LS Sport, which I totaled had 98K on it when I totaled it, also ran like new when I totaled it.
