These 9 Cars Were Manual Only, Until Recently

Spurning the Stick Lifestyle in the Name of Sales

"What happened to you, man -- you used to be cool.""I'm still cool!""Nah. You've changed, man."Thus went the famous exchange between the alternate-universe versions of Bart and Homer Simpson (the universe with POTUS Lisa). It's also what we'd expect to hear between a manual transmission buff and a vehicle that had stuck with a stick as the only means of changing gears only to announce it'd be converting to or adding the option of an automatic. In enthusiast circles, the crop of purely manually shifted vehicles on sale today -- SRT Viper, Ford Focus ST, Honda Civic Si, and company -- is well-documented. There aren't many. But the yield would have been greater had the following nine cars* bucked up and held out against going automatic.*Our list consists of currently and soon-to-be available vehicles that until recently (within the past few model years) only were offered with three pedals.

I wish the Monte was a stick that would be funner to drive for sure. I don't mind it an automatic though.

Definitely manual. I wish the Monte was. If I could make it either manual transmission or RWD, I'd probably choose the stick. My 2013 Ford Fusion is a stick shift - not a common option for that car

any performance car worth it's weight should be a manual shift. I would love to have my car as a manual shift.

Hi `Brent, it would be great `if your Monte was RWD &
a six speed stick 4-Sure...

How is the shifting linkage on your Fusion ?
What engine ? Is it a turbo ?
I like the new Fusion Masseratti Look & Style.
I think Ford did a good job on it.
Thanks for your post.

Yes, Zach, I think it would `be FUNNER 2 (lol)
Thanks for your post.

It can be done to a Monte `if you have the
Time & Big $'s

Thanks for your Votes & post.
Stick is winning @ the time of this post

My 2013 Fusion (otherwise know as the Gen6 Ford) is a 6 speed manual with a nice short and crisp throw. It is only a 1.6L Ecoboosted (turbo'd) engine. Efficient, and the smallest displacement engine I've every had in a car - smaller than my old 1.8L '86 Prelude! But the cool part is that it makes peak hp at only 2200 rpm. With six gears to thrown through, it'll move it pretty quick for a car that dwarfs the BudChev. It's only 180 hp or something close, but I've app charted the Monte in the 1/4 and even tho it sees brief peaks above 300hp (@ around 5000rpm) it's usually pushing less that 200hp with only 3 shifts. The Fusion won't keep up, but that gearbox keeps it in the power band and relevant. I can assure you that the Fusion would sound spank the 2.5t of the '04 Volvo I traded in.

Hi `Greg,
I don't think that you are pussed `out @ `all.
You are just telling `it how it is 4 you
& I appreciate your preference.

The new automatic transmission are out performing
many standard-manual transmissions @
the tracks in many forms of racing.

I think the new tech electronic programs are
becoming faster then manual transmissions.

I still prefer to shift gears & be a part of the
experience of driving.

But, with the new auto's & paddle shifter, I can
see the advantage of the lastest
automatic computer controlled transmissions.

The new 8-Speed Automatic
Transmission Generation

Emission regulations are intensifying. To achieve the necessary fuel consumption and CO2 savings in all passenger car classes, not only improved engines are required, but also more efficient transmissions, like the 2nd generation of the 8HP.

QUICK LINKS

Massively Efficient

The further optimized, second generation of the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission offers even more driving fun and reduces fuel consumption by another three percent. The optional start-stop function provides further fuel savings potential. It was possible to cut the already very low power losses of the 8HP even further with the 2nd generation. The focus here was mainly placed on a further reduction of drag torques and engine speed. This so-called "downspeeding" is a key factor when making conventional drivelines even more efficient.
The 8-speed automatic transmission does more than economize on fuel, it also delivers top performance. It enables comfortable and dynamic gear changes and thus supports the driver. Brief response and shift times below the threshold of perception stress the 8HP's sporty character. This means that double shifts and direct multiple shifts are also possible.
Thanks to a flexible modular concept, the 8-speed automatic transmission is equipped to meet all requirements: With one model range, it covers the broad torque range of between 220 and 750 newton meters. The basic transmission can be modified depending on need and intended application: The result is one complete transmission generation with different configuration options ‒ from hybrid drives to all-wheel drive.
