Default WARNING! Thefts using VIN's

This is posted over on Tri-5.com. Thought you guys would be interested.

http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43970

Here is INFO worth the price of your car....

WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?

The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle,
write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.

The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car.

He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it?

It IS that EASY.

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.

By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

I slipped a 3x5 card over my VIN
NUMBER. PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ALL YOUR FAMILY AND
FRIENDS NOW!!!!!

Thanks R.J., for the heads `up.
Locks just keep honest people honest : (
It's sad that there are so many out there that just take from others that have given `up to get what they have.
We spend and pay Billions for protection of the things that we own, and still the bad will find ways to steal it away.

It's very `sad It should not `be, but it is...
I think the penalty for theft should be "LIFE in a Work Camp....Catch them and put them on a isolated island. Don't just catch them and let them out in a few days/months so they can repeat again...Look @ the rap sheet on thieves..., and most of them have dozen's of convictions, and they keep getting out and repeating....They have become master thieves of taking what is not theirs : (

Sadly, there are bad people on Planet `Earth and they will continue to steal your stuff until the honest, hard working citizens rebell and demand that the bad be removed from our society.....`amen

Thanks R.J....Put your auto collection in a large vault, with explosives for illegal entry - guard attack dogs - armed guards etc : )

I too would think any dealer would ask for an ID before they cut a key from a VIN.

But you never know????

The local chevy dealership demanded I show them my government issued vehicle ownership and photo id just to buy the stripes on my junior edition.

When I bought my Monte, I asked about getting a spare key made. They told me it had to be ordered through a GM dealership, and GM cut the key. Not the dealership. But that was a couple years ago. Maybe GM has lowered their standards?

Not calling you a liar RJ. I'll take you for your word. But I find it hard to believe that any Shmoe off the street can get a key made like that. Meanwhile I have to provide two pieces of government ID to buy some freakin stripes.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to take a quick look at my neighbour's new Camaro SS. Need to take a look at the, uhh... driver side windshield wiper. Looks a little dirty. LOL.
