Thieves targeted Charlotte and Stevan Arbona's car three times.

Twice, their Honda Accord had the air bags stolen out of it right in front of their Brooklyn home. The thieves broke a back window to get access each time. "As soon as we got the air bags replaced, they came back," Charlotte says.

The third time, the whole car was stolen, only to be recovered a few blocks away sans air bags and with some other minor damage. The Arbonas invested in a parking garage after that.

In Pictures: Ten Tips to Thwart a Car Thief

In 2005, there were 1,235,226 motor vehicle thefts, which is 2,625 less than in 2004, NICB data indicates. (Data for 2006 will not be available until later this fall, the organization said.)

Although that is only a slight drop -- less than 1% -- the number of cars stolen each year has been trending down for a decade.

"It began to drop in 1996 when we started using computer engineered controls," says Robert Sinclair, spokesperson for AAA New York (formerly called the American Automobile Association). "It wasn't as easy to hotwire a car."

On the morning news today I saw GM vehicles with Onstar will be able to be shut down if reported stolen, beginning with 2009 models.I guess it is like the remote unlock except in this case it is a remote "kill switch".

I just leave my big dog Nala on the drivers seat. Shes a 66 pound rotti/sharpei mix. Never had a problem. When Im at home, its in the garage, so I guess it would be harder to steal. I dont really like the whole onstar kill switch idea. From what I understand, a lot of thieves avoid onstar equipped vehicles out of defualt. (My insurance company tells me), that a thief will be more prone to go after a vehicle without onstar then the headache of removing it, or hiding the vehicle from it.

That was great, I remember seeing that on TV before.

It is supposed to be a real commercial.

I also put on side vent shades that just stick on the doors over the glass so I can leave my windows down a hair. When I didn't have them there were 3 attempts to break into my car the first week I had it. I picked up those and it was 2 times in the next 3 weeks, and I finally installed my alarm.
