Question Thoughts on the Cobalt???

Hey all, My GF is looking for some new to her transportation. Trying to lure her from the dark side (read: Dodge) Think I have her interested in Cobalt sedans, would help if any of you that have had experience with them could tell me/her what you think. Would you buy? Would you run away? She's not looking for "performance" so there is no need to post about the SS. She's looking for something with decent mpgs for not a lot of $$$ (maybe around $10-12k ???). Probably only looking at a few years old vehicles 08-?? So if you have any ideas I would happily pass them on.

Thanks in advance.

i LOVE the cobalt 2dr coupe. a friend of mine bought an 07 new, it had very few options, 4cyl and a 5 speed, 2dr, manual windows & locks, hubcaps, no spoiler, it was bright yellow. that little thing was FAST and it handeled AMAZINGLY well, the interior was very comfertable for me ( and im 6'3") and layed out very nicly, easy to get in & out of, not bad even in the back seat there was enough leg room. best of all, the lil MPG indicator constantly reported about 38 MPG, and this was haulin a$$ through winding hilly roads to be compleatly honest, i would trade something like my monte for that lil car... heck, i would probibly pass up an 07 monte SS for a cobalt SS... i was that impressed with that little car

Thanks for the link Space... Told her I'd see if I could work a deal like I did for my mom's 08 Impala SS but she wasn't much interested (just what do I see in her anyway???:p). Never really seen a "consumer report" type mag/web site that liked any GM car or truck. Wonder what's up with that.. and faulting the back seat??? Isn't that mostly for groceries, dogs and little kids?

Thanks too Ryan, I'm about the same height so that was one of my concerns, her Stratus can be a little tight from time to time for me... probably mostly due to my girth... Did I say that out loud??? Sounds like about what she would want minus the stick and yellow paint.

A Cobalt is a cheap little car. Yes the SS / Tuner ones can see a good amount of performance, and for their light-weight they seem like they are quick little devils.

The base ones I think feel cheap. Not a comfortable drive for me. It's basically like a Cavalier, they are decent little cheap cars. They will do what you need them to do, but there are certain driver comforts that I like in a vehicle and those just don't provide.

I find them way too light, not the best handling, and noisy on highways.

You own an Impala don't you? Does she have much against those?? A nice Impala LS can run good MPGs will be plenty roomy and a comfy drive.

i hate the stratus sedans, our school has one as the drivers ed car and i could not fit in it for worth a damn, let alone get comfertable. that thing is horribly tiny inside concidering its at least as big as a monte on the exterior.

mike, i do agree the interior plastics seemed kinda cheesy, but nothing was ratteling around inside and everything seemd to fit nice & tight. which you know that the roads around here can can knock a car apart good.

Didn't figure the Cobalt was in the class of the Impala or Monte, But I'm not really sure it's what she's looking for either, just wants a little DD that gets decent mileage and will make the occasional trip to Florida to the parents for holidays. She was impressed with the deal I swung on the Impala, but I haven't managed to get her in it to show her how nice it is, think the V8 makes her nervous, but now that you mention it the LS might be a decent option, car is really bigger then what she's used to but I'm sure she could adjust. I'll have to swing past my mom's and trade her for the Impala so she can see what it's like... Damn, Mike has another good thought... I hate it when that happens!

I'm not talking about rattles so much as just the outside noise getting in. These smaller cars just don't seal up as well and that wind noise is loud to me.

The Cobalt is just a domestic ricer in my opinion. Right up there with the Focus and Neon, just domestic versions of imported cars. I think they're all about the same. If you just can't stand the site of your girlfriend in an import, Mopar, or FoMoCo, then go ahead and get her into a Cobalt. But like another member has already said, it just succeeded the Cavalier.

Well say that was a productive post... I realize that the Cobalt is an entry level car, didn't really expect Benz quality out of it... That's the reason I asked people that had experiences with them to give me the thoughts they had of them... You find me a newer decent car for the price she can swing with the mileage she's looking for and I'll be more then happy to take a look!
