‘Smart Highway’ concept glows in the dark, generates energy

Dutch designers' road lights up and captures wind energy from passing cars. U.S. engineers have some tricks of their own.

By Douglas Newcomb Thu 11:45 AM

By now, you've heard how smart cars can talk to each other in traffic. Next up are smart roads that use embedded sensors, innovative paints and energy-harvesting devices that can provide real-time feedback on driving conditions -- and possibly power your next car.

The first Smart Highway prototype is already being planned in the Netherlands and should be ready as early as 2013, according to its creators at the Dutch design firms Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure.

The pair won Best Future Concept in the Dutch Design Awards 2012, and they say that several of the technologies may be ready to hit a highway near you in the next five years. Here’s what to expect.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series revealed

A race-bred model joins the gullwing line.

By AutoWeek 20 hours ago

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the 622-horsepower V8-powered SLS AMG Black Series ahead of the powered-up gullwing coupe's public debut later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Sporting a series of aerodynamic and mechanical developments brought over from the SLS AMG GT3 race car, this is the fifth in a series of limited-production Black Series models, following from the high-priced SLK55, CLK55, SL65 and C63 AMG coupe.

As tradition dictates, the SLS AMG Black Series is outwardly distinguished by a series of aerodynamic and bodywork changes that provide a distinctly brawnier appearance than the standard SLS AMG — in keeping with its race-bred lineage.<!--EndofExcerptMarker-->

Exterior elements include a deeper front spoiler with carbon-fiber splitter, carbon-fiber winglets to aid airflow to the front brakes and a carbon-fiber hood with a large central duct for improved engine cooling. The front wings are extended by half an inch inch and rear wings are stretched by 1.1 inches, necessitated by the car's widened tracks and larger wheels and tires, wider sills with carbon-fiber inserts and a significantly larger carbon-fiber rear diffuser.

In a nod to its increased performance potential, AMG's latest model will also come with an optional aerodynamic package that sees additional winglets attached to the outer corners of the front bumper as well as a prominent rear wing attached to the boot lid in place of the standard retractable arrangement.

Along with more purposeful styling, the Black Series adopts a number of weight-saving measures shared with the SLS AMG electric drive revealed at the Paris motor show. The Black Series also uses a carbon-fiber rear bulkhead and center tunnel, which cut about 154 pounds from the standard issue's 3,417-pound weight.

The heart of Stuttgart's latest supercar is a heavily tuned version of AMG's M159-designated 6.2-liter engine. Though horsepower is up, torque drops lightly to 468 pound-feet at 5,500 rpm. Maximum horsepower is available at 7,400 rpm and the engine revs to a soaring 8,000 rpm. That makes for 39 horsepower more than the SLS in standard trim (583 horsepower).

The naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 gasoline unit adopts a series of detailed modifications already featured on the SLS AMG GT3 race car, including a larger inlet manifold, high-lift camshaft, revised valve tappets and oil system, lighter bearings and stiffer connecting rods. Plus, the strut mounting is claimed to reduce load change during hard cornering.

Further engine changes center on the exhaust system — which switches from steel to titanium construction — reduces back pressure and weight, adding an even more striking exhaust note.

Despite the wholesale upgrade, the SLS Black Series is not the most powerful version of Mercedes-Benz's reborn gullwing coupe. That distinction goes to the SLS AMG electric drive, whose quartet of electric motors provides combined outputs of around 740 horsepower and 738 lb-ft torque.

Together with its added reserves, the modified engine in the Black Series possesses a greater ability to rev; peak power is developed higher in the range, maximum torque is delivered higher and the ignition cutout is raised from 7,200 rpm on the standard unit to 8,000 rpm—the highest of any existing road-going AMG model.

Channeling drive to the rear wheels is a modified six-speed double-clutch transaxle. The Getrag-produced unit, which forms part of the rear-axle assembly, has been extensively reworked with a mounting system that sits it 0.4 inch lower than on the standard SLS AMG as part of efforts to lower the car's overall center of gravity, revised software that is claimed to provide faster and more aggressive downshifts and a lower final drive for improved acceleration in combination with the increased torque loading.

Additional driveline developments include the adoption of an electronically controlled differential lock in place of the existing mechanical arrangement. The system is claimed to provide faster lockup intervention, improved traction and increased yaw rate for added agility. The three-stage electronic stability program and race-start system have also been recalibrated in line with the car's increased performance.

AMG claims the SLS Black Series accelerates to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 196 mph. The marginal reduction in top speed over its less-powerful siblings is a reflection of the new car's added downforce.

Underpinning the new car is a heavily revised chassis boasting tracks that have increased by 0.8 inch in width up front and 0.9 at the rear, new wheel carriers and a larger diameter front roll bar. The double-wishbone suspension is also heavily revised and is described as being 50 percent firmer up front and 42 percent firmer at the rear than the standard SLS AMG, and it also offers manual adjustment of the damping for individual tuning.

Further changes center on the adoption of unique 19-inch front and 20-inch alloy wheels with a 10-spoke design shod with 275/35 and 325/30 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The Black Series also uses ceramic composite brakes, which feature 15.8-inch front and 14.2-inch rear discs as standard.

The first customer deliveries of the SLS AMG Black Series are planned to get underway in June 2013.

Hi `Mike, I also like the AMG , but I also like the BOSS Mustang...I know, isn't it sad that dealers go crazy with limited production models like the boss & add to it's price because of it's limited edition...It makes one think that they are in business to make $'s They always seem to find that person that will pay $10K + over MSRP

The bad news is that there won't be another Boss, but the Mustang will get independant suspension
The track-ready Boss 302 package for the Ford Mustang will not be on the options list for the 2014 model, according to the order guide sent to Ford dealers.

The 2014 Ford Mustang will be the last of the fifth generation of the car. A redesign for the 2015 model is expected to arrive in early 2014, using a new rear-drive platform that includes an independent rear suspension and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine option.

The dealer order guide was posted on the Internet by fan Web site Mustangs Daily. The fact that dealers have the order guide now is a sign that the 2014 Mustang will go on sale in early 2013. For the past few years Ford has given each model year of the Mustang an early sales start

It wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret, Mercedes-Benz’s plan to come up with an über bad-*** version of the SLS to maintain the momentum and give the competition something to chew on. We spied the prototypes and we received hints from AMG chief Ola Källenius himself. Despite all the foreshadowing, though, the aggressiveness of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series leaves us stunned. The gaping intakes, the spoilers, and the carbon-fiber trim of Affalterbach’s latest pride and joy makes the SLS AMG GT look pretty vanilla—only by comparison, of course.
The Black Series models are rarer, quicker, much louder, and beastlier than the standard models on which they’re based. To top the regular-grade SLS, Källenius's troops laid their hands on almost every facet of the car. The 6.2-liter V-8 engine now makes 622 hp, a healthy dose of burly over the standard SLS GT’s 583. This bump in power is achieved through a derestricted air intake, a revised valvetrain, an increased compression ratio, and a redline elevated from 7200 rpm to 8000.
Interestingly, peak torque has dropped from 479 lb-ft to 468. And while the 0-to-60-mph sprint is quicker at 3.5 seconds versus the GT’s 3.8-second time—we think those are awfully conservative estimates considering the last standard-spec SLS we tested did the deed in 3.5 seconds when Benz predicted 3.6—top speed actually drops from a governed 197 mph to 196. Go figure. It would appear as though the extra power can’t conquer the aerodynamics.

To keep the engine reliable under extreme loads, the crankshaft and its bearings are modified, a new oil pump is installed, and the connecting-rod connections are altered. The structure housing the higher-power engine is supported by a gas-filled strut brace to keep unwanted movement to a minimum. For the three people who believed the regular SLS sounds too wimpy: A much louder titanium exhaust system has been fitted to the Black—it also happens to be nearly 29 pounds lighter than the standard car’s exhaust. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic has been mounted a touch lower than in the SLS GT, and it features quicker shift programs as well. And your grandmother will appreciate the fact that the throttle blips on downshifts are “more pronounced and striking than ever.”
Grip is improved by a new, electronically controlled locking rear differential, and the control-arm suspension has been significantly altered. The coil-overs can be individually adjusted, and the SLS AMG Black Series sits on 275/35-19 tires up front and 325/30-20 tires in the rear. The same carbon-ceramic brakes available on the SLS GT come standard on the Black.
Visually, the aforementioned air intakes and carbon-fiber trim make an immediate impression, and that’s because the SLS Black’s looks are inspired by those of the SLS AMG GT3 race car. The front end features aero flics bookending the lower fascia, a front splitter, and a large heat extractor in the center of the hood that also increases downforce at the front axle. A fixed rear spoiler with a Gurney flap resides on the decklid when the car is optioned with the Aerodynamics package. The body is significantly wider, and four exhaust finishers replace the dual outlets of the SLS GT. The Solar Beam exterior finish is unique to the SLS Black Series, but otherwise the car can be painted the same color as any other gullwing Benz.

Depending on your priorities—speed or comfort—the interior has been either upgraded or downgraded. The COMAND telematics system is thrown out, saving 13 pounds from the interior, but it remains available as an option. But in stripped form, the SLS AMG Black series manages to drop an impressive 154 pounds when compared to the plain-old SLS GT. The remainder of the interior is swathed in faux suede, Designo leather, carbon-trim, and red accent pieces.
The SLS AMG Black Series ought to have AMG aficionados tripping over themselves to get one of the limited-production Blacks when the car goes on sale next summer, even though we expect prices to have a considerable markup from the base car’s $192,175 sticker. Even though the SLS Black Series is the baddest piece of machinery to come out of Affalterbach, there’s always more to look forward to. After all, there’s an SLS Roadsterthat hasn’t been Blackened yet, right? View Photo Gallery
