I'm thinking about getting a storage unit in the future to put one of my cars in. I know atleast a few members have storage units for their cars in the winter and i'm just looking for some info. Pros, cons, prices and anything else worth knowing would be apreciated

 

Look to pay at least $100-130 for a unit big enough for that purpose. Check and see how secure the storage facility is as well and I would check with local police to see if they get calls from a place you're looking at. I didn't do that once and lost a bunch of stuff. The police suspected an inside job but were never able to prove it. I have my Camaro in a unit though so it's been convenient.

 

I don't see the purpose personally unless you have one you can get for free.. you'll pay the value of the car in storage in a couple of years..

Make sure you get insurance though. All the units around here that I know of have camera systems.

 

Well i dont know what else to do, i have no garage and i'm tired of having my cars outside in the elements. Suggestions?

You could get a portable garage deal.. or an all-weather car cover, have to be careful so it doesn't scratch the paint.

 

Thing you gotta watch out for with covers is moisture getting trapped underneath it. Friend of mine with a 79 keeps his under the cover and he makes sure to take the cover off on a regular basis to let it air out, especially when it's humid. I got one for the 73 because I live in an apartment and won't be able to live in a house with a garage for a while.

 

When you go to check out storage units, do it during the rain, or right after a big storm so you know if it's waterproof or not.

 

A really nice car cover will probably be cheaper than a storage unit. I don't see any issue with putting a car up on jack stands and putting a nice cover over it for the winter. It won't be seeing any salt because it's not being driven, and it won't get snowed or rained on because of the car cover. You could even take the wheels off and put them in a basement or something to enure they are out of the elements.

I can certainly sympathize with the no garage thing. I don't have one either. Something you may want to consider...

See if maybe there's someone in the neighbourhood that you trust, that doesn't use their garage. I have a few older neighbours that don't use their garage, so they rent them out. Might be cheaper than a storage unit, and it's closer. Downside is the neighbour has access to the garage with your car in it. And there's a good possibility their pets would be climbing all over your car.
