I kinda like a couple of the explanations already offered.
In my opinion, that's certainly the case when people throw swear words into a conversation every other word like Rick jokingly did in post #6 above. But there are times when a swear word is just the most satisfying thing to say. Like for example: You're having a bad day, you're WAY behind in your work. You're typing up a long essay, or some other long document, and about 80% into it, the power goes out and you lose the entire thing. You will have to start all over again. F***!!!

in 1815 there was a book called a Yankee in England, and it started using the word Cuss instead of Curse. Then Mark Twain picked it up because it didn't sound as bad.
