I am truly sad to see Pontiac retired. But I am sure the spirit designers put into those cars is NOT lost. Keep in mind, almost every car Pontiac released had a kin on a different label (Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo for example).

GM is not gone (and sadly had to get government assistance to stay alive, which as I understand their government money is all paid back). I am NOT a Ford guy, but my hat is off to them, they appear to be weathering the economic storm better then the other two making up the big three.

I'm not sure about the money borrowed from the US government. But GM fully paid back the money borrowed from the Canadian government earlier this year.

It's sad to see Pontiac go. But Greg is right. Pontiac was died a long time ago, they just made it official now.

At one time, before my time, each division was actually just one model with different trim lines. Over the years they turned into "divisions" with multiple models. I think the worst idea GM had was to rebadge the same car for every division.

The 80's was the worst for blatantly re-badged cars. But in recent years, GM was much better about it. For example, even though the GP and the Monte were both W-bodies with the same power-train, visually you wouldn't know it. The cars were so different from each other.

As far as current Pontiac models go, I'll miss the G8 and maybe the Solstice. But the rest will be easily forgotten.

Oldsmobile needed to go. They never really broke out of the "blatantly re-badged" phase.

Buick is huge with older people, and the overseas market. So I can see why it stayed.

Cadillac has been really struggling to find their niche lately. But you don't kill off your luxury line, so that stays too.

It's too bad GM couldn't have kept the Pontiac name alive with just the G8 and possibly one other model.

I agree with all comments made. Pontiac was the "wide track" version of its gm siblings since the mid 90s. I really loved the cars, not so much the lemans, but hey, we all have embarrassing pasts.

I don't mind they kept buick around. But they need to bring back the name that buick used to have that made them a bit more popular with the kids. I loved the grand national AND GNX. They were simply amazing cars. I remember being 8 and seeing one. Fell in love and will own one someday.

All gms took a big hit in the early 90s, not just the pontiac. Look at the nova.
I really do wish they would have kept the GTO, trans am, and G8 and just made them for a while.

now i do agree with all the replys.but the gto back in its day was a big hit.still is with with the classic car lovers.but ive been watching the trend at least in my town that domestic cars are taking a back seat to the asia made cars..i think if it keeps goin the way it is.gm will be a thing of the past.it is sad to watch and read this about pontiac id rather see ford go."id rather push my 3450lb monte than drive a ford".recently my mom and stepdad went to longbeach for a few days.when they got back they bought me a 1970 GM ad for a monte carlo.i read it and read it.then it hit me, i think GM has lost it's love/passion to make cars that make people excited to drive them.my monte is 40 years old,not painted and not a powerhouse.but everytime i get behind the wheel.i feel like GM cared back then, like they wanted you to actually enjoy driving this car.alot of my friends drive hondas and i give them sh*t about driving them, and they all give me crap about gas mileage..but all i tell them is "i would rather have 8mpg and enjoyment then 30mpg and no fun".i know i rambled on about alot but i tend to do that.lol well take care all and good luck with the MC's..

I'm gonna have to agree with millermontess on this one for sure. And the only reason buick is still around is they aged with their market.

I have to agree with Greg also. When ever you see a Buick on the road, 9 times outta 10, its being driven by an old person. Lou said its HUGE over seas. Whats going to happen when all of the Buick-driving senior are gone and the "NEW" seniors are driving Hondas and Toyotas? Will Buick become an "EXPORT ONLY"?

They should have kept Pontiac and moved Buick to Japan.

Just wondering...

Do people overseas think "damn imports" every time they see a Buick?

I was thinking the exact same thing. I know that here in the states, people go nuts over JDM cars. (Japanese Domestic Market) Do the people in Japan consider it to be a "good" thing to have an all original American car?

Actually... the adults would love american cars because they are bigger, more expensive, and show signs of wealth. The younger (however) still want their own cars because they are cheaper to buy/ modify. And they handle the streets better.
