Yeah I actually have seen that episode about four times. I think Mike bought that leather plate for $1,800.

I hate to bump this, but since you brought it up. Where do you usually pick up the plates?

I see them a lot in garages. Especially if you have any small "mom and pop" style gas station with a garage. Flea markets usually have them too. Or if you want to over pay for them, go to ebay. But online, people want to get rich quick from selling them.

car swap meets and flea markets. sometimes estate sales will have a couple. gotta look around, some people want $5 apeice, others will expect $50. really depends on the seller.

sometimes you can find 'em in old junkyards too, still on the cars or in them.

Ryan, junk yards around me have stopped letting the public go into the actual yard a long time ago. Too many parts sneaking out in tool boxes, jackets, etc. Plus the yard's insurance if someone gets injured. Not sure what it's like in other areas.

i hate to say it but it's gotten to be the same around here, mostly due to insurance regulations. i've still got one "old" yard i can walk around, but not for long. it's being shut down by the EPA, which i hate to see but at the same time dosin't suprise me, what with how much oil and such has spilled and leaked into the ground over the years!

I find most of my plates at antique shops, car shows/swap meets, and from people that just give their old plates to me. Like Ryan said, you really have to look around for them and ask the right people. You can find very good deals. There's usually at least a few vendors in antique malls with license plates. I'll walk through an entire antique mall just on the lookout for plates. You can always tell by what people have in their section if there's a good chance of there being plates or not. I have yet to do an estate sale and I haven't gotten any of mine from junk or salvage yards. Most salvage yards don't have them anyway.
