CANADA DAY 2009: Celebrating who we are
Wed. Jul 1 - 4:46 AM
WHEN you’ve been around 142 years, you’ve seen a few highs and lows.
That’s worth remembering today, as our remarkable country marks another birthday in the midst of a deep, global economic slowdown.
Canadians have weathered tough storms in the past — two world wars and the Great Depression, for example — and no doubt we’ll do so again.
If history has shown us anything, it’s that we Canucks are a proud, resilient bunch who have always found a way to persevere.
On this Canada Day, we celebrate, as the anthem puts it so well, this "glorious" nation — its history, its future, and its very nature as one of the world’s most stable democracies.
What we take for granted, the right to vote and have it fairly counted, to live in a land protected by rule of law, is but a dream for far too many people in other nations.
It’s a sobering reminder, as we look around the world today — to the repressive dictatorship of North Korea, the vote-stealing theocracy of Iran or the takeover by military coup in Honduras — that Canada’s system of government, despite its many faults, remains the envy of many people on this planet.
Indeed, the reason, in large part, that our country has now grown to more than 33 million souls is due to the addition of so many immigrants, who’ve come here to make better lives for themselves and their families.
That’s certainly another reason to celebrate.
Although this Canada Day holiday falls in the middle of a week, its significance reflects so much more than the opportunity for a long weekend.
It’s a day, in essence, to celebrate who we are. Whether you spend it with friends or family, on the beach or picnicking at a park, relaxing at home or visiting others, or in some other circumstances altogether, at some point today we hope you take the time to raise a glass to toast the 142-year-old constitutional monarchy.
Here’s to Canada, eh!

Happy Canada Day eh.
Lisa just hit me cause i commented that " She sure knows how to wave a flag.
As for me, i'm just here having breakfast with a lump on my head. I think she used a spoon.
I wouldn't mind going to Canada some day. Eh.
