SINGER ISLAND, Florida -- A massive 1,000-pound, 14-foot hammerhead shark was caught by a Florida fisherman Wednesday afternoon in shallow water.
Fritz Van Der Grift was fishing off of Singer Island in Palm Beach County when he snagged the shark, which he says he never intended to kill. He just wanted to get its picture, but the shark died during the struggle.

"I saw that huge shadow, and I was like, 'I can't believe it,'" Van Der Grifd said. "So, I just grabbed the reel and started reeling."
It may not be the biggest ever caught -- the current record is 1,280 pounds -- but it impressed the crowd on the island.
The shark's organs will be flown to a San Diego laboratory for research. Biologists say they plan to get six or seven different studies from the animal, preventing the shark's remains from going to waste.

A Florida fisherman may have set another world record when he reeled in a massive 1,000-plus pound shark near Tampa on Tuesday.
Bucky Dennis of Port Charlotte in southwest Florida single-handedly caught the 13-foot hammerhead in Boca Grande, near Tampa, Tuesday morning, according to WFTV. (See photos and video)
He caught the shark at 9 a.m., but it took another two and a half hours to reel it in.
It's not as big as the all-tackle record 1,280-pounder he caught two years ago, but at 1,060 pounds, it should smash the current record for 80-pound test line by 440 pounds, the Fort Myers News-Press reported:
Dennis is aware of the controversy he stirs by killing the large female hammerheads that come to feed on tarpon at Boca Grande. When scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota dissected his previous record, a 14-footer, they found 55 unborn pups inside.
Dennis said he got a phone call from Dr. Robert Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research at Mote.
"I almost thought he was going to cry, he was so disappointed," Dennis said. "He told me he didn't want me to ever kill a big shark like this again."
Dennis said he catches and releases at least 20 sharks per year at Boca Grande that would weigh 300 pounds or more.
To certify the record, Dennis must submit documentation, including photos and weight certification, to the International Game Fish Association within 60 days.
