WEST SPRINGFIELD -- A patrolman fearing for his life as a suspect behind the wheel of a stolen Department of Public Works plow truck allegedly tried to run him down in a snowy parking lot Sunday morning shot out the vehicle's tires, police said.
Even with four flat tires, Capt. John Ferarini said, the suspect continued to attempt to run down the officer in the parking lot of First Niagara Bank at Westfield Street and Kings Highway.
"He kept gunning the truck," Ferarini said of the suspect, Wayne Mecteau Jr., of 9 Thomas Drive.
The incident began when Officer Brian Battista spotted the small plow truck, which had been reported stolen from a Water Department facility on Piper Road, driving on Westfield Street.
Battista followed the stolen truck as it pulled into the bank parking lot.
"The officer got out to approach [the vehicle] and the guy tried to run him over," Ferarini said, adding the suspect repeatedly fish-tailed in the snow.
Police ultimately had to pepper spray Mecteau before they could arrest him, Ferarnini said.
Police found what they believe to be stolen jewelry along with syringes and heroin inside the truck, Ferarini said, adding that police continue to investigate. They believe that Mecteau initially stole a car, got stuck in the snow and then stole the truck.
Mecteau was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer. operating a vehicle with a suspended license, failure to stop / yield and possession of heroin.
