Default The Joys Of Owning An Older Car

There are some? [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

Oh wait. I forgot what I was going to say for a second. Ha, ha.

My barn needs some repairs. A contractor friend of my father's looked over a couple problems and said he's convinced the barn was built wrong 20 years ago.

The major problem. The center support beam. It was made by nailing three pieces of 8x2s together in staggered fashion to make one beam. My dad's friend says these should have been no less then 10x2s and the middle piece of wood is more or less not doing any support work.
Then there's the header over the overhead door. Made in the same fashion but using 12x2s. The friend feels only the outside piece of 12x2 is supporting the roof and upstairs of the barn in this area. He says one good freeze could bring the roof in.

So...............
I get to move all my cars out so this work can be done. Plus they're going to install a new overhead door.

Got all but my first (non-running) car out. It'll have to stay. not that I'm happy with this. And my 4-door.
My g/f Debbie & I got all the other cars out on sunday. She helped me get the 4-door to the overheard door so it can come out. This morning I got it running. I think it's been in the barn close to 2 years now? More like it's been almost 2 years since it's been on the road. It's been started and out of the barn but not on the road.
But I got it started and noticed a puddle under the engine. HERE WE GO.
I do a little search and figure out the water pump is gone.
Coolant is coming out of the weep hole at the bottom of the pump.
Good thing I have spare parts is all I can say.

Now what was it I was saying about the joys of owning older cars?

the looks you get when crusing thru town, the stories of other people who celebrate those same joys as you, the thrill of driving a piece of American history....

Well I changed the water pump. And I found out my spare is bad also.

So nowI have to buy one. If nothing else it'll be cheap insurance for the engine. I don't want to scrap the original engine in this car.

LMAO You guys crack me up. So good to see grandpa Dave back!

Sorry to hear about your barn RJ. But that's what happens when you hire Mickey to build it for you.

How long is it going to take to re-build? I wouldn't want my classics sitting outside too long. But you're doing the right thing. That would be tragic if the roof caved in. Especially if someone was inside at the time. Like you said, one good amount of snow on the roof could have been disasterous.

One of the joys of owning a classic car is the looks and compliments you get for a job well done.

As my dad says the joy of owning an older car is that every time you drive it something else breaks so you get to be outside away from the wife working on it.

With all the parts I have stashed upstairs in the barn I would not want it falling in.

The contractor says he's sure he can do all the work in one day. That's why he was waiting on the door guy so all the parts would be there when needed.

But my dad called me last night and told he didn't think they were coming yet again THIS week.
And I did all that prep work in expectation of them coming.[sm=boohoo.gif]

Well if nothing else, I found out my 4-door needed a water pump and got that taken care of. Okay it'll be taken care of right after the paint dries, I get the new pump on, radiator filled, and the engine started to look for any leaks.

We have a '82 Olds 98 Regency 2 door coupe. About the only time she gets driven is to go pick up a friend and the 3 of us go to Church and back on Sundays. A true only driven to Church and back car. Well, I happened to notice last night, when I opened the garage door, that the tail pipe was dragging on the garage floor.
AAAAAHHHHHH! The joys of owning an older car!

How about this one?

'95 Chevy "beater" Beretta - $750
Cost of materials for new brakes, rotors, muffler hanger, etc. approx. $200
Inspection fee $60
New windshield to replace cracked one - $169
New trunk lock because my key got stuck - $25.00
New thermostat $20.00
Breaking down on the road, just when you thought you had fixed everything - PRICELESS

Kind of disheartening, to see my first car that I've had for just about a month, being towed away because it won't start.

Edit: repaired broken photo link.
