Being from the Midwest I can surprisingly understand most accents very well. Especially the southern because i do listen to some country music although Im more of a rock guy myself. But there are some older southern rock groups I listen to anyway.

There was a show on the history channel about the south and how the accent developed. There are interesting influences from Scotland, Ireland and England.
For one company I worked for, I became the resident translator for "Deep South" since I grew up in Southern Alabama. I have to admit that I miss the drawl.
I do think they missed a common pronunciation for Pecan. In central PA, many people say "peekin." That's just wrong .... Like a pie can peek around a corner
