I think it's a great profession & I believe our world will always need good mechanic's 4-Sure..
I know that I have saved some big $'s from what my grandfather taught me about cars, and I'm just a BackBeach Mechanic that's learned the hard way...I've learned to not tackle jobs that I am not trained for & to search out a good mechanic to do the work...
and hopefully assist & learn...

I am self taught and have learned by doing. I have changed motors and transmissions, Ive done all kinds of part replacing and along the way I've picked up the skills to diagnose problems and make the repairs. If a project seems too big or needs specialized tools or skill like a rebuild I leave it to a pro.

The poll should be multiple choice. My mechanical education is kinda like Heinz 57...a little bit of everything. I learned by helping others and diy, took auto shop in high school (was a TA for 2 out of 3 years), went to and graduated from a mechanics and machinist course at college, became ASE certified then expanded my knowledge through on the job training courses.

My dad has always done a lot of mods to his vehicles. So I sort of picked up a few things from him. I've been around quite a few derby cars and helped out a little when I was younger, probably too young to actually pick up any useful info but still. He got hurt at work just before I got the Monte so all of the mods on it have been done by me usually with friends help. I'm sure if my dad gets a descent sized garage in the future we'll be able to work on stuff a lot more, at least I hope anyways. Always fun working on a vehicle/project with somebody you know cares just as much about it as you do
Not sure really, i'm not a mechanic in the sense i could do an engine swap but i've got some general knowledge between i guess my dad and self taught.
