I always watched my father and neighbors, and then helped out when needed. I was and still am curious about how stuff works so i still take stuff apart to see how it works. Plain and simple when i get bored i break stuff just to give me something to do, that something is putting it back together.

Learned all the basic maintenance through helping my Dad do repairs when I was younger. As far as modifications go, that was mostly trial and error and reading on the forums. My engine build and swap was my first major mod. As long as you go slow, and are careful- you can do almost anything.

I buy a good manual - Chiltons or better yet, a factory manual (they're cheap on e-bay), then follow the directions. I do my own work because I'm so damn cheap. I really don't enjoy spending a Saturday under my car, but I hate paying hundreds of dollars to someone else even more.

I drove Fords for a while. Didn't take long before I had to learn to work on cars.

I've learned some knowledge from my dad bcuz hes a mechanic & all but then I've also learned on my own. My dad has never taught me how to work on cars but I've read about it & I know some of the basics but have never really been able to apply it, besides taking my exs blower off a few months ago

Observation, listening, reading, auto tech class in the 70's, trial and error and out of necessity.

I'm with Quartermain on this one. No one really taught me, my dad wasn't into doing it himself. I did watch/help my older brother back in the day but I'm trying to start to get my own knowledge base, start small and work into bigger more complicated things... I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks!
