Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day
World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
In 1968, new legislation changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.
Tomb of the Unknowns

Tomb of the Unknowns, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day center around the Tomb of the Unknowns.
To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil.
At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes "Present Arms" at the tomb. The nation's tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath and the playing of "Taps."
Unknown Soldier Identified
On Memorial Day (which honors U.S. service people who died in action) in 1958, two more unidentified American war dead, one from World War II and the other from the Korean War, were buried next the unknown soldier of World War I.
A law was passed in 1973 providing interment of an unknown American fr

Our Canadian Brothers who have served
News Release
November 5, 2007
Veterans' Week 2007: November 5 to 11
Ottawa - The Government of Canada is pleased to mark Veterans' Week 2007, from November 5 to 11. The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs will undertake a national tour to participate in local commemorative events and activities across the country. Canadians, especially youth, are encouraged to get involved in local activities that honour Canada's Veterans.
"We hope Canadians from our largest cities to our smallest villages will participate in local Veterans' Week activities," said Minister Thompson. "By doing so, we show our respect to Veterans and visibly support our men and women in uniform today."
Communities from coast to coast will take part in candlelight tributes, musical concerts, exhibitions and theatrical productions. In Ottawa, events will include a Candlelight Tribute at Lansdowne Park and the annual "Canada Remembers" theme week at Encounters with Canada. A Remembrance Ceremony was also held in the Senate of Canada on November 2. Veterans' Week will conclude with the Royal Canadian Legion's Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at the National War Memorial. Similar ceremonies will be held at cenotaphs in cities and towns across Canada.
Veterans Affairs Canada has also produced a package of educational materials to bring Veterans' Week and the important messages of remembrance into Canadian classrooms. All Canadians, especially youth and community organizations, are encouraged to take an active role in Veterans' Week activities in their local communities. Visit www.vac-acc.gc.ca for more information on Veterans' Week and activities in your area.

He has a Gold Star but won't comment on what it was awarded for or, or why/when/how, anything??????????????

Thanks Space for starting this thread.

We have a number of members (including a couple mods) here on MCF who are members of the US and Canadian armed forces. I'm sure the rest of us are either related to, or know someone, who was/is in the military.

In Canada we also remember our veterans at 11:00 on November 11th.

I would encourage everyone, no matter what country you live in, to take a moment of silence to remember those who have fought and those who are currently fighting for your country.

Like the saying goes: "Freedom isn't Free."

I had an uncle who served in the army in WW2. Until the day he died last year, he refused to talk about the things he saw while in combat.

3 generations in a row of my family have served in the military....

My father and uncle served in the coast guard and navy respectably. My dad was discharged for a broken knee after falling off of a balcony like thing on a Coast Guard ship. My Uncle, unfortunatly, served dishonorably... he was caught with drugs on a Navy Ship on the way to Italy, he went A-wall after he broke out of the brig and flew back home from Italy.

My grandfather served in hte US Naval Air Force (the tuffest of them all, ever tried forcing air thru your naval) He joined right afterPearl Harbor. He trained in Oklahoma. After he was caught messing around with the mayorof the local towns wife, who's husband was good friends with the Captain of the base (or atleast I think thats how hte story goes), he ended up with a choice:join the newly formed Army Air Force and end up fighting in the war, or get a dishonorable discharge. He went to war in Japan, flying spy planes, and when all h*ll broke lose in Korea, he ended up flying his plane to Korea. He was the man who spotted the Chinese on one of their invasions of South Korea.... it was the dead of winter, and they were riding white horses pulling white equipment, wearing white snow suits. He ended up getting a purple heart after evacuating their air strip and getting his leg broken. So anyways, he ended up being 5 mins away from getting the leg cut off, but his temperature went down at teh last moment, and requested a discharge after some rumors came down about shipping out to Afghanistan (at the time, nobody had heard of it)... at this point, my grandfather had never even seen his now 3 year old daughter. My grandfather got his discharge one day before orders came down to ship out to Afghanistan, and later worked on NASA (maybe I'll share some of those stories later.)

My great grandfather served on a destroyer in WWI for the US Navy. I don't know much about his exploits.. other than he served honorably as a sailor.

Hope you guys enjoy reading about my somewhat disfunctional family and our military history.
