White supremacist group eyes property in John Day
Idaho man says he wants to create a compound and hold a national gathering in 2011

JOHN DAY - Leaders of the Aryan Nations in Idaho say they want to move the headquarters of their white supremacist movement to Grant County.

Paul R. Mullet, who called himself national director of the movement, was in John Day this week, looking at property to buy for a new "national compound."

The visit stirred concern in many quarters, where residents worried about the neo-Nazi sentiments of the movement and the negative impact that it could have on the community.

The group teaches that the white race is the only one descended from Adam, and that Jews and non-whites are the natural enemies of white people. The mission, outlined on the group's website, is to create a state for the "Aryan race," separate from all non-whites, and a "lawful Congress of our race."

Mullet, wearing a uniform shirt with a swastika patch on it, said the group's goal is to create a homeland for white people.

"That area is the Pacific Northwest," he said. "The blacks have Africa, the Jews have Israel ..."

Mullet said his group's current headquarters is in Athol, Idaho, but it doesn't have the attributes of a real compound. If they can find the right building in John Day, he said, they will be able to provide barracks and space for training recruits, as well as a place for meetings and gatherings.

He wants to hold a national gathering in the county in September 2011.

Mullet said the group was drawn to the remoteness of Grant County, the relatively low cost of property and "the proximity to the mountains" for survival training.

They were particularly interested in two properties, the old junior high building on Bridge Street and the vacant church or opera house building on Dayton Street.

He declined to say where the money for such a deal would come from, but said they would pay cash "from legal means."

Newell Cleaver, School District 3 superintendent, said the junior high building is no longer being actively marketed because the district is pursuing discussions with the Grant County Library Foundation about a possible sale and development of a library there.

The other building is up for sale, but the listing agent had not received an offer late Wednesday.

During his John Day stay, Mullett was accompanied by two Grant County residents: Jacob Green and Christopher Cowan, and Leif Berlin, described on the group's website as the Washington state leader. Green, of Mt. Vernon, is the Oregon state leader for the Aryan Nations, and Cowan was described as a sergeant in the state organization.

They denied that Aryan Nations is a hate group, although their website calls Jews "parasites" and other names, features a Nazi tribute on video, and includes a section of crude references and manipulated photographs of black people.

While staying at a local motel, they opened the door to their room to clearly display Nazi-style banners as two employees - a black and a Hispanic - went about their work.

Motel officials said people in two other rooms vacated before their stay was up because of concerns about the white supremacist group.

Mullet's group said they don't expect any conflict with people in Grant County.

"This is a good fit with the values here," he said. They said members would do community service projects and patrol the streets, making it safer for the residents who live here. They also contended their group would bring money to the economy by drawing more supporters to visit and live here.

"Coming here would help the county immensely," Mullet said.

Norm Gissel, a Coeur d'Alene, Idaho attorney, disagreed. He said the neo-Nazi movement had a chilling effect on tourism and property values in northern Idaho during its heyday under Richard Butler, the founder of the Aryan Nations church who has since died.

Gissel spearheaded a civil rights lawsuit that bankrupted that Aryan Nations organization and Butler in 2000.

Asked about this group relocating to Grant County, Gissel said, "From an economic standpoint alone, you don't want that to happen in your community."

He said communities need to be vocal and firm in resisting the establishment of such groups.

"You've got a potentially serious problem, and the time to start organizing is right away," he said.

John Day Mayor Bob Quinton was dismayed at the prospect of the group moving to town.

"That's the last kind of thing our reputation needs," he said. "We need to be inclusive and emphasize positive things here."

There's a flaw in that theory. If everyone decended from Adam and Eve, then doesn't that include all races? "White" is not a race by the way. White is a paint color. Nobody on earth is "white". But I'm not about to debate with a white supremacist group. No point.

They can have a homeland of their own. How about Antarctica?

I can not stand people who believe they are better then someone else. We are all a part of this planet and share the dreams of freedom, success, and happiness. I agree that white is not a race but a paint color. It is frustrating that people spread such vile ignorance. I would say they are more than welcome to form their own country in antarctica.

They're doing nothing good for anyone... they're making Christianity look bad by twisting its teachings to their own advantages. They're making white's look bad as portraying all of white people as being so ignorant. They're making American society look like it has not put the 1860's behind us. They're making the county they are moving to become a hot spot and setting back race relations there. No one wins here. It's ridiculous.

I wish they had to guts to move to South East (S.E) Washington, DC.

At this point they are looking to locate. I would say the chances of them moving are very good. I will be heading 116 miles east when needed to help protest the possible relocation.

You'd better be prepared because they are going to throw around first amendment rights all day long! The Supreme Court has held that obsinity can be restricted, but they define that as being pornography and nudity, or "whatever would be offensive to the majority of the community shown." So you don't really have a case here. You could try to show that there is a clear and present danger shown, under Schenk v. U.S. However, I don't think you've got a case. The U.S. Supreme Court hasn't really made a ruling on hate speech , which is what this qualifies as, in my opinion. In Gitlow v. New York, the Supreme Court actually ruled that such language could not be restricted. You're going to have a hard time fighting this legally. They're going to argue that you are saying "Well if you say that we don't have the right to be here, then you are saying that the first amendment basically protects free speech until we say something you don't like!"

You're really in a tough spot. This list is not all inclusive of what the courts have ruled, but just a quick little note on what I know of the subject from high school and college classes dealing with the topic, and I've tried to pay attention as I'm planning to teach this stuff one day!

The plan for the local residents is to practice their free speech and be very vocal in opposition and make it as inhospitable as possible while they are in town looking at property. Businesses plan to refuse to do business with them. Glad it is not my town, but it is to close for me.

There are groups other then white that have the same beliefs.

If the two videos a friend sent me are true, there are Muslim groups in the U.S. training it's members to slit the throats of anyone who opposes them. One of these groups is located in western MI.

The US will never get rid of racism due to the fact there is to much money to be made by it. If the US really wanted to get rid of racism there is two major areas that it could work on. One is the government and the other is media. I have talked with alot of difference races of people and they all agree with me.

First, government. Simply put there is votes and money to be made by it. If the US government was truely serious about getting rid of racism they would not have special programs for minorities. That in itself is helping fuel racism. Of someone that really needs it and can't get it but someone doesn't really need it but can get it because of their race....then we got problems with the system. Truely, if the US government would reread the Dec. of Indep. and get away from all of the minorities stuff and truely have all men created equal then you have taken away alot of future issues that can or will come up. If you do not believe this will work...Go to England...they had slaves and when they decided it was wrong they freed them made them equal to everyone else and now go over there and there is little to no racism.

Secondly is the media. The media likes this stuff because it gives them stories and ratings. If 6 white kids beat up one black kid then on the media it because of race but if 6 black kids beat up one white kid they claim it is not because of race. And when you turn on the news at night what do you see....a white police officer shooting a black person and of course he doesn't like minorities etc or you see some young black person that is caught in some crime. Now when you are watching that if you are black you think that every white police officer is out to get you. And if you are white you watch the news you think that every young black person is a criminal because that is all you see on the news. The media had been programing this country for years and people believe it.

If people in the US would quit trying to sub classify themselves with other nations and just call themselves what they truely are. We are all Americans so we need to all view ourselves as Americans and quit trying to seperate ourselves.

On a sidenote, in school they told us...white is not a color it is a shade of a color just like black is a shade of a color. But if you look at the light colors then black is the void of all light and white is all light combined.

On another sidenote, if you think that I am racist then meet me at the track...when that light turns green you will see my racism come out :P Cuz the race will be on :)

If you (a law abiding citizen) are at work making an honest living and a criminal (someone who willfully breaks the law) breaks into your house and breaks their leg can sue you and win.

Where in some states if someone breaks into your house and is unarmed they can take your TV and you, by law, can't touch them since they do not have a weapon and do not mean you any harm.

Where someone can break into your house and shoot and kill your wife and when you get your gun they turn and flee. If you shoot them in the back then you can be arrested for murder and possibly convicted.

Where someone can be stupid eought to spill hot coffee on themselves and sue the place they got it from claiming they didn't know it was hot and get 4 million dollars.

Where on youtube there is a 911 call from someone because they wanted Burger King to sell them a hamburger and Burger King refused.

Where if I called you up and told you that I was going to kill you....the police by law can't do anything because I have not commited a crime. But if I called the President up and told him the same thing then I would be behind bars.
