The new-for-2013 Buick Verano Turbo swaps the base Verano’s 180-hp, 2.4-liter four for a 2.0-liter turbo four providing 250 hp and a fatter, flatter torque curve. To cope with the added power, the Turbo gets a mildly stiffened suspension and a unique steering assist calibration. Our test car had the optional (and no-cost) sixspeed manual; an automatic with the same cog count is standard.

On the road, the 3,482-pound Buick accelerates to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. This is impressive—and brisk—but we were especially pleased that Buick gave the Verano Turbo just enough handling prowess to make us grin on an interstate entrance ramp. The front tires howl early, but a slight lift of the throttle promptly tucks the nose back in line. Once the shenanigans end, the Turbo is uncannily, almost supernaturally quiet, and it provides a soft, but not floaty, ride over broken pavement.

Other than the badge on the trunk, the Turbo’s only stylistic cues are dual exhaust outlets and a small, katana-shaped rear spoiler. The interior is unchanged save sportier pedals. These touches are attractive but almost invisible from the curb—think of the Buick as less of a glamorous movie star and more of a cute extra sipping coffee in the background.

At $29,990, the Turbo costs $2,350 more than a similarly equipped auto-only base Verano, making it a decent value. We wouldn’t pick this compact sedan for a mountain-road thrill, but it’s a strong candidate for livening up your commute.

The way I see it anything they can do to improve performance, economy and efficiency is a plus. A few years back you needed a V8 or a highly modified 6 cylinder to run a 14 second 1/4 mile. Now they're doing it with a 4 cylinder.

On a track it looks good, but in real life driving? I'm not taken on the turbo scene.

A guy at work just got an Audi Q4 i think its called. a 4cyl with a turbo. It sounded good on paper he said but he got an automatic with an 8 speed!
He says the Turbo NEVER kicks on because it shifts before the RPM's get high enough.
He spent 37G's on the car and hates it.

I love the `Rumble of a V8 with a mild `cam
It's the best sound out there while driving a ride.
I don't need a radio/etc, `if I have good tunes playing
from super speakers like below My right foot is the conductor (lol)
and I like the low rumble notes, and also the high RPM notes lol

It's music to my ears

The sound of that V8 makes me want to drop a V8 into my Monte.

I have to agree. Nothing sounds like a nice V8. That Audi that Devin mentioned sounds like a waste of a turbo. But they must have been thinking of something. Why would they put a turbo in it, if the turbo is never going to kick in?
