Default GD! Look what my wife did!

I am in shock. Without consulting me at all, my wife just traded in our (my) car on a 2021 Mustang GT. No kidding. This is the actually car here:

I am steering you a bit. It's not the Monte she traded in. I would kill her and she knows that. I have to give up my practical, fuel efficient daily driver - a 2013 Fusion. And that means that this new Mustang is actually going to have to be my new daily driver.

I don't even know how to feel about it all right now. This news is literally 5 minutes old to me. Of course, a nearly 500 HP Mustang seems like a hell of an upgrade. But forgive me if me and the BudChev are just a little bit offended. Look at that thing. It is totally trying to steal everything the BudChev has going for it. Same color - black wheels. Obviously, it will blown the doors off the Chev. I don't know how to adapt to something in my own laneway showing my trophy up like that. I'm hurt a little, y'know? She's paying for it any way...

I was just about to sink a little money into the Monte Carlo. I might have to sink a lot in now.

What do you think? How would you feel? What would you do?

Two thoughts:

1. No offense to you, but I'd be beyond furious. For the 'average' family income, that's a huge financial burden (especially when you factor in registration, insurance, gas). Unless you're sitting on millions and $30k+ is chump change, that really should've been a well thought out joint decision rather than a random surprise. Even if the burden can be absorbed into your current budget, thats still a healthy chunk that could've been invested for retiring sooner.

2. Assuming this is your first modern performance RWD vehicle, I'd bet you'll probably cool off on spending more money making the monte faster pretty quick. The amount of money it would take to get the monte to even equal the performance of that Mustang is huge. Then you factor in even doing basic mods to the Mustang thatll make it even faster still with such a well supported aftermarket. IMO the 'out of the box' performance of modern cars is one of the primary killers for people continuing to mod the W body platforms.

Just my .02

x2, I'd be furious if a car purchase was done without my consent. I made sure to talk to my wife before getting my 2012 Camaro.

and it is true. I haven't spent much money on the Monte since that Camaro has hit the fleet...

I do wish your wife went and bought a Camaro though!!!

I agree on both thoughts. I should not have been out of the loop. I won't delve into the financials, but we're not rich. However, for the most part, I already pay the lion's share of our expenses and even after 14 year, I have no idea what she spends her money on. I do now!

I probably won't get too crazy upgrading the Monte, but I've already spent a few grand on some cool new suspension stuff that I was going to install in the warmer weather and I will still be installing. I don't want this car left behind. It's been a major part of my identity for the last 14 years. But I've been on the forum for many years and seen it enough times. That's where most of the old members went...

I think she's going through some kind of midlife crisis and trying to recapture her youth. She used to have an old fox body - I think an 88 - when she was a teenager. She loved it, tho I hated those old ones myself. I would have liked to do a little comparison shopping, but I didn't even know "we" were looking at this sort of thing. Anyway, she could have bought a lot worse. A VW would have got her kicked tf right out

I totally get it, that's why I've still got mine too. Its been in the family for almost 25 years and owned by me for nearly 20 as it was my first car.

I've modded it enough through the years that it's still fun to drive even if its nowhere near as fast as my other stuff. I also really enjoy it being a one of one modified by me at any cruise in (vs say one of 15 C7s at the cruise in where they just cut a check for a shop to do work and barely even know the name of the parts used).

Every time I fire her up and hear that first cold cam chop it reminds me of the first fire up after the L67 swap back in college when myself and my girlfriend (now wife) finally completed the project in the dead of winter.

Beautiful car!

This might be the go-ahead you needed to really bring your Monte some extra life to compete with it

That would be pretty hard to do. But if I'm willing to spend the 50 GRAND+ that she did on her car, I could probably turn the BudChev into a 10 second car
