Are You Ready to Ride an E-Tracer? - News
This X-Prize winner is slated for joint production/U.S. marketing by its Swiss designer and California’s AC Propulsion. Built for Kid's from `Space that live on Planet `Earth
By Dennis Simanaitis
The E-Tracer is a sleek enclosed 2-wheeler that won the Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize in the Alternative Class (Tandem) category. Part of this competition, you may recall, rates a vehicle’s suitability for actual production—and Peraves, its Swiss designer, has already signed a Letter of Intent with California’s AC Propulsion for joint development/U.S. marketing of the E-Tracer.
Essentially an enclosed motorcycle EV, the E-Tracer has gullwing access to its tandem seats. Automatically retracting side wheels transform the thing into a diamond-footprint 4-wheeler at low speeds. Once under way, the E-Tracer handles just like a motorcycle, though I suspect its configuration makes one a bit more conservative in cornering angle (but not by much!).
Peraves has been selling gasoline-powered precursors of the E-Tracer for 15 years in Europe. The X Prize encouraged the company to develop an electric version, and it went to highly respected AC Propulsion for the powertrain. The two firms’ Letter of Intent is a first step in bringing 100 E-Tracers to market starting in 2011. They’ll be assembled at AC Propulsion’s San Dimas, California, facility, with 21st Century Motoring serving as Peraves’ North American agency.
Check out the video. The E-Tracer looks like real fun!
