A Funny Thing Happened On My Way Home
On my way home from a delightful lunch at the best Mexican restaurant in town, I notice a Shelby Cobra kit a few cars up from me. As a battle thru traffic, I notice that, as kits go, this one is quite stunning. Silver with dark gray striping.
By the time I finally get behind him, he is turning off the main road onto the same rural one lane road I am. After the turn, nothing but a road and trees for 3 straight as an arrow miles. Jets of black smoke shoot from his beautiful dual chrome side exhaust, and hes off. I spur the Monte, desperate to know if he cheaped out on the power plant.
Apparently he did. I never fell more then 2.5 car lengths back. With a V6. With the air conditioner on!!
All those pretty smoke shots when he hit the gears didnt mean much. By the time he realized I was not going to be impressed by his disastrously underpowered "hot rod", we were at about 90 in a 55, too darn fast for that bumpy road. He slowed to a much more reasonable speed, and I gave him some courtesy car lengths.
He comes to his turn, and he drives away. In one of the prettiest cars on the road.

Yeah, it must have been a really small engine... those cars are just lightweight fiberglass on a minimal metal frame. There is hardly anything to the interior, the engine is like 1/4th the weight of the car... so that's not a lot of power in that car. Sounds like a crate 302 or 305 that has been burned up doing that take off thing a few too many times.
Shoot, that actually wouldnt surprise me! At first I thought it was funny, then I sorta felt bad for the guy.
Most of the shelbys you see driving around are kit cars. Usually if someone has a real shelby they will probably not ever really get on it. Or even drive it for that matter.

i've heard of some crap like that lately with other cars...
