Capitalizing on the allure of attractive models for automotive advertising is anything but a recent phenomenon. Inventing a supermodel, on the other hand, is one of the more inspired tactics we've stumbled across in recent memory.

According to the marketing gurus at Adweek, Ford has placed a full-page advertisement in the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition that includes a beautiful blue Mustang posing alongside what appears to be an equally beautiful and scantily clad model named Dalena Henriques. A quick Google search on her name, not surprisingly, brings up dalenahenriques.com as the top result.

Here's where things get a bit tricky. It seems Dalena Henriques may not be a real person at all. A visit to her website shows the stunning brunette in pose after pose with the 2013 Mustang, and her face is never fully in the frame. The Mustang, though, is front and center in every single image. Clever, Ford. Very clever.

I have not been able to locate the Chevy Swimsuit Edition (?) ???????????

Ford is very clever and using the facts.

Fact number one: men buy the majority of the new cars.

Fact number two: men love the allure of a scantily clad beautiful woman. Even if he knows he can't have her the thought is there if for only a moment What If?

Fact number three: men love sports cars almost as much as scantily clad beautiful women.

Fact number four: combine facts one, two, and three and you have a home run for sure.

Yes, very clever Ford. Lure in potential sales of the Mustang by using sex as a sales agent. That's nothing new. It's been a known fact for years that sex sells. The clever part is the money Ford saved by using a mannequin rather than a real person. I'll bet you guys are a bit embarrassed now that you realize you've been drooling over an inanimate object. Maybe you could contact the writers of that strange addiction show and have them do an episode about your mannequin obsession.

The fact is sex sells. Everyone knows it. It's a basic fact of life that people will be attracted to an attractive person of the opposite sex. And don't think women are above this kind of advertising also. Advertising aimed at women contain good looking guys a lot of times also. Guys (okay, straight guys) don't buy a men's cologne because of the shirtless guy in the billboard ad. Girlfriends and wives buy the cologne for their guy because of the shirtless guy on the billboard.

This ad campaign by Ford is a smart move. Not only does it get the normal attention from guys. But it no doubt will get all kinds of publicity from the Nancy Grace types. Who will inadvertently give Ford even more publicty by airing their outrage at the "sexualizing of women". Which makes absolutely no sense if you think about it. A non-sexual woman is not a woman. A non-sexual man is not a man.

Bingo!

And let's not forget about all the subliminal images and wording that is superimposed into the advertisement.
