Weird News
KFC's Naked Sandwich Ups Ante on 'Food ****'

Dave Thier Contributor
AOL News
(April 9) -- On Monday, KFC unleashes a menu item that would make even the gluttonous Earl of Sandwich take pause: a meat-on-meat creation featuring cheese, bacon and mayonnaise layered between not bread, but two fried chicken breasts.

News of this not-sandwich, dubbed the Double Down, has brought out a special kind of vitriol in the blogging community. "The vilest food product created by man," wrote TreeHugger, while Consumerist called it "potentially lethal."

Hyperbole aside, the Double Down's over-the-top nature seems to be the main selling point. With it, KFC joins the ranks of Burger King, Wendy's and other fast-food outlets that have had success marketing enormous, unhealthy burgers.
Dan Kremer, KFC / AP
KFC's Double Down is essentially a sandwich featuring two chicken fillets instead of bread slices. In between are two pieces of bacon, melted slices of Monterey Jack and Pepper Jack cheese and a zesty sauce.

Among the first to embrace the concept of unapologetically decadent food was Hardee's, maker of a double bacon cheeseburger called the Monster Thickburger -- a culinary invention so excessive it inspired the term "food ****," says Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Hardee's parent company, CKE.

According to Haley, fast food is a guilty pleasure for many people, and so they want products that cater to their unhealthy cravings, rather than fight them.

In the past, KFC has made attempts to shake its greasy image by slimming down its mascot, the Colonel; dropping the word "fried" from its title; and adding grilled chicken options to the menu. The Double Down, then, is a dramatic break from that trend -- and one that Haley is surprised hasn't come sooner.

"This product is the first thing of this kind that I've seen from them in a long time," Haley told AOL News. "They've said, 'We'll just kind of accept that this is a decadent food. And we'll take it up a notch rather than minimize it or downplay it.' "

The fascination with decadent -- some would say disgusting -- food is strong on the Internet, where blogs like This Is Why You're Fat show pictures of the least healthy foods people can dream up, such as the "double coronary burger," described as "a burger topped with five slices of bacon, four slices of cheese, two fried eggs, mayo, lettuce, tomato and onion between two grilled cheese sandwiches."

Real commercial products don't approach the level of the double coronary burger, but according to food-industry consultant Darren Tristano, they benefit from the same sort of morbid fascination.

"Freak shows are disgusting, but everyone seems to want to go to them anyway," he told Salon.com. "When there's an accident on the highway, everyone gapes."

Ok, Now, I'm hungry...I think `Lou -Taz- should buy all the member's a `Happy Meal lol

900 million Big Macs are sold in more than 130 countries every year -- no wonder it's considered one of America's best-loved burgers. But is the Big Mac the best fast food burger? With so many competing burgers out there -- the Whopper, the Six Dollar Burger and the Jumbo Jack among them -- does the Big Mac really have claim to the title of best fast food burger? WoW 900 Million

I don't really eat fast food very often, so its a hard call. None of them are really a favorite for me, since the only time I really eat fast food is when there is nothing else around, i'm in a hurry, and need food.

If I had to choose, I guess Taco Bell. I just order 2 bean burritos, and 1 soft taco.
