THE RECKONING [:-] [:-]
The Iraq War Will Cost Us $3 Trillion, and Much MoreBy Linda J. Bilmes and Joseph E. StiglitzSunday, March 2008

There is no such thing as a free lunch, and there is no such thing as a free war. The Iraq adventure has seriously weakened the U.S. economy, whose woes now go far beyond loose mortgage lending. You can't spend $3 trillion -- yes, $3 trillion -- on a failed war abroad and not feel the pain at home.

Some people will scoff at that number, but we've done the math. Senior Bush administration aides certainly pooh-poohed worrisome estimates in the run-up to the war. Former White House economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey reckoned that the conflict would cost $100 billion to $200 billion; Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld later called his estimate "baloney." Administration officials insisted that the costs would be more like $50 billion to $60 billion. In April 2003, Andrew S. Natsios, the thoughtful head of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said on "Nightline" that reconstructing Iraq would cost the American taxpayer just $1.7 billion. Ted Koppel, in disbelief, pressed Natsios on the question, but Natsios stuck to his guns. Others in the administration, such as [URL=http://

as good of a cause as it may or may not be... what is the cost? What about even the costs of healthcare for the troops, the benefits we must give them... wow...

Hi `Duane,
It's not a pretty story. My mind can not comprehend the cost,
just not in dollars, but in humans : (
We can sacrifice & replace the funds, but we can not replace
the humans that were killed, or the limbs of those returning.
I've personally have seen the damage that can be done to our
troops : ( They will never be the same, physically, or mentally : (
They are our age. . . I've thought about enlisting,
(there are many benefit's), but I don't think I could `kill
without knowing the reason was truly `justified.
I admire the brave that are serving now, and in my past.
I believe they are worthy of our `thanks,
our care, our respect.
They are, or have given, to protect.
It's frustrating to me, and our future.
I wish we could all live in peace.
Is there anyone out there that can lead us ?
Who has the fastest `Monte Carlo ?
We shall attempt to follow.
God Bless our Troops
and all countries
that support
`freedom
`amen

The Founders warned us against foreign entanglements (among other things), but of course we didn't listen. They wrote the Constitution as they did forspecific reasons, but we've allowed our federal government tohold it incontempt. One of the most compelling examples of this is George Washington's farewelladdress to the nation in 1776, in which he discusses the importance of religion and morality, and of maintaining stable public credit. He also issues warnings about the evils of foreign entanglements and alliances, politicalparty systems, and an over-powerful military establishment. For those who have not read the text of thisfascinating and propheticspeech, itwould be well worth your time to do so.

We are more than $9,000,000,000,000 in debt, halfthe world hates us, the dollar is on the brink of collapse, and our brave young men and women are beingused as cannon fodderin foreign conflicts thataccomplish nothingother than enriching the military industrial complex. We should have listened to old George and the others, but it's far too late now.

I try to stay out of the political topics on the site and stick to Tech talk about Montes. But this topic is a sensitive subject to me Cuz I was there. I just reenlisted in the Army for 6 more years which will make 17 years. I love the military and would go back in a second. The info from our media on the Iraq war I feel there is focus on the negative aspects of the war. (Gee The Media Negative imagine that) I personally have worked alongside of Iraqis wanting to make a difference for their country. I were really thankful we were there, in many of the kurdish towns giving us the heros welcome parades when we rolled thru. If the media would show those stories America would have a different perspective on the whole war.

I don't Want to start a debate I just had to put my two sense in somewhere.

Hi Nathan,(Thank you for your Service)My post topic was not meant to be political statement, but a reminderto remember our troops.Nathan, I wish we did not have a war to write about onour forum, but we do, and it affects our lives, our present, our future.I think the war is more then oil-fuel for our Monte Carlo's, but it is one elementof the many problems our world is facing.A reminder on the cost of War in Dollar's, & in Human Loss : (With the internet today, one can search the web andread what our military personnel are saying about the war.(I read what they are say'in)There is a highcost for freedom, but I personally wish that we wouldtake care of our own country first, before we go to other countries.I hope that we can elect leaders, that lead by example, and not by force. The cost of freedom can be very `high. The powers of the Web/Internet[:-]
BAGHDAD — The black-shrouded website opens with a soldier's silhouette and the pounding rhythm of Nine Inch Nails: "Into the fire you can send us," the words go. "From the fire we return."
This is the Unlikely Soldier's blog, where a young infantryman known as The Usual Suspect rants and shares his experiences in what soldiers call The Sandbox.

"One year ago," when his unit first arrived in Iraq, "we were nervous and excited and apprehensive. Ready to do this. Green as snot. I was all sorts of optimistic, thinking we were going to do great things and kick lots of ***, GI Joe hero type (expletive). That we could be cool with the people, and bring the hammer down on the baddies."
Then, every soldier's nightmare: "A low rumble shakes my Stryker (armored vehicle), and two of our guys are killed by an IED while they were dismounted.
"People emerged from their houses and cheered."
