DETROIT -- Students at Phoenix Multicultural School on Detroit's southwest side were evacuated Wednesday morning after an explosive device detonated inside the building.
The device, made of household cleaning chemicals, exploded in the hallway of the building at about 8:30 a.m., said school officials.
School officials said no students were injured because they were all inside classrooms.
Police said the 540 students at the K-8 school were immediately evacuated, and many were forced out into the cold without their coats.
The students were bused to Roberto Clemente School, which is located at 1551 Beard Street. Parents are asked to pick them up there at the end of the day. School is expected to resume at Phoenix Multicultural Thursday.
A 14-year-old student is in police custody.
Homeland security agents are at the scene with bomb-sniffing dogs.
An investigation into how the student brought the device into the building is under way.

What happend to the days...of just " running down the hallways........talking in class.. and chewing gum in class ?
It's starts at home. This country needs parents that will discipline their kids
and schools should be allowed to discipline as well. For the most part, My generation turned out o.k. with discipline in our schools........
Sad.

We all knew better then to pull a knife on a teacher or other student. This included the tough guys who would beat you up for lunch money.
The knife I carried I got in Myrtle Beach, SC while there on vacation. I gave $10 or $15 for it at a hardware store two blocks from the beach. It was a 5 inch Barlow. I mean a 5 inch blade. Not 5 inches folded. It wore holes in my jeans exactly in the shape of the knife.
Not once did I ever get in trouble for the knife (minus carving my name in the desk tops) while in school.
Litterially just a few mins ago i was talking with my g/f and she just found out that our local highschool canceled there pep ralley(not sure of what sport it was for) and the winter fromal(dance) becuase of gun threats and apparently the local pd found a few freshmans(9th graders) in possetion of guns...
I know this makes me sound old. But when I went to elementary school, we got a beating from the school principal for throwing a snowball. And we didn't dare tell our parents. Because if our parents found out we threw snowballs and got in trouble at school, we got in even worse trouble at home.
Now adults are deathly afraid of what the kids will do if an adult tries to discipline them. Something wrong with that picture.
Kids need their parents to be parents. Not their friend. If you know what I mean. Hopefully that makes sense.

My .02 cents...
Problem is the government/school officials. I have a 20 yr old son in the USMC. Why? Cuz I brought him up right. Whipped his *** when he deserved it and NEEDED it. Had child services called on me 3 times while he was growing up. Once because i took a belt to his butt after throwing a puppy in a beaver cactus patch. I told the detective, I would do it in a heartbeat again if he repeated that action. Told Child Services the same thing. They kindly asked me to spank him with an open hand next time. Then I told them both they could kindly exit my house. BTW I was a state trooper at the time...
Everyone is afraid of these officials. I am not nor was I ever. My son is a proud upstanding young Marine that KNOWS right from wrong cuz his dad taught him the difference. Do good, get good things. Do bad, and you get your butt whipped.

Well times are much different now than when the people who talk bad about how "kids these days" are. It woudln't hurt to know this kids situation. Today, you have many more problems in homes than you used to. There are more parents getting divorced, more single parent families, nowadays most kids who do have two parents have both of them working outside the home. Sometimes there just isn't anyone home to discipline the kids. The kid is only in school about eight hours a day, it may not be completely the schools fault, although parents like to claim it is.
