I know how unions work, and i also know that the most recent labor agreement expired 9.20.05,
SO THEREFORE, THEY ARE DISAGREEING OVER THE PROPOSED CONTRACT. THEY WILL HAVE TO GIVE SOMETHING UP LIKE EVERY OTHER UNION IN NORTH AMERICA IN ORDER TO GET WHAT THEY WANT. THE EMPLOYER AND UNION OFFICIALS ARE CONSTANTLY SEARCHING FOR A HAPPY MEDUIM IN WHICH TO WORK. JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF CONTRACTORS SCREWING THE UNION OVER.....

APPARENTLY YOU DONT KNOW HOW UNIONS WORK, LIKE MOST UN-UNIONIZED AMERICANS WHO THINK THEY KNOW, AND TALK OUT OF THEIR ***. GUESS I KNOW WHERE BUSH GOT ALL HIS VOTES, UNEDUCATED FOLKS WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BLUE COLLAR MEMBERS OF SOCIETY. WITHOUT US, THERE IS NO FOUNDATION FOR THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ECONOMY WILL FALL QUICKLY IF THE DEMISE OF MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR ESTABLISHMENTS SUCH AS UNION TRADES TAKES PLACE.

I LOVE HOW UNEDUCATED, UNINVOLVED PEOPLE INTERJECT THEMSELVES AND WHINE ABOUT STRIKES AND HOW BAD UNIONS ARE.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STUDY WHY THEY STARTED, AND HOW THEY AFFECTED THE COUNTRY IN A POSITIVE MANNER FROM THE BEGINNING. BETTER YET, JOIN A CONSTRUCTION UNION SUCH AS THE IBEW, AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE ROOM TO TALK. UNTIL THEN, DONT WASTE MY TIME ARGUING WITH ME OVER SOMETHING YOU KNOW A MINIMAL AMOUNT ABOUT.

I for one feel that Union's had it's place in the workplace in it's conception, however, I feel as if they are and have been linked to the death of many companies and are the direct reason we can not compete in the world market place today. Yes, I think everyone should make as much money as they can but also feel that the market should set wages.

nj85z28 please don't take this personally but I feel that if I were not happy with the wage I was offered at the company I am wth I would find other employment offering what I feel I am worth. Not happy with management, treatment, conditions get out and find another job. There are many other organizations and laws out there protecting us from employer abuse. Again, not directed at you NJ85Z28 just my feeling towards Unions...

I almost hate to join a heated argument, but I have to say, "Amen to that, Montejass!" Now, I'm not claiming to be an expert on the subject so I hope no one jumps all over me. I happen to work for a company (a defense contractor) where the hourly employees are unionized and the salaried employees (like me) are not. So I do have a little knowledge of the union. In addition, classes I have taken in college and in grad school have addressed the subject, and the overwhelming majority of the class agrees with us, Montejass. Granted, the majority of the class participants were non-unionized employees.

That being said, I do respect differing opinions. That's what makes this country great... our freedom to have and respectfully share our opinions!

Apparently you have short term memory problems, so let me refresh it....."since it's inception in 1985, the CAW has used pattern bargaining in it's dealings with Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and GM." That being said, THEY, as used in your response above, indicates both parties involved. When in reality, THEY, should only refer to GM since THEY are the one's who are choosing to refuse the pattern. Pattern bargaining IS THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE of the CAW Union, GM has known that for two decades, it's nothing new. So it's clear who is employing the "wildcat" tactics here.

First and foremost, don't EVER insenuate that I did or would vote for George Bush!![sm=icon_flaming.gif] Secondly, stick to the subject at hand, let's be very clear that we're talking about the CAW Union, no other. So what is it that I don't understand about the CAW? Please, enlighten me. Their union's principle seems simple enough to me....they come to an agreement with 1 of the 3, and then press the other two to agree to the same. It's been that way since 1985. And for your knowledge, I was a member of UFCW Local 870 Hayward, CA. for 6 years. So much for your asinine theory that because I am not unionized, I don't know how unions work.

Uneducated people do exactly as you did, divert attention away from the topic to hide the fact that they have nothing relevant to say about it. I am stunned at how you turned this into a personal attack on me, my character and my level of education/knowledge when none of that has anything to do with the subject. But hey, if that's what you need to do to make yourself feel relevant, knock yourself out[sm=loser.gif]

Since I'm the only one you quoted, I can only assume that I am who you are referring to in the above comment. Need I remind you that I am the one who started this thread, therefore, I am not interrupting or squeezing into the conversation as I am the one who started it. Not only that, but I am not whining about strikes or how bad unions are. Show me one time where I said Unions are bad? Show me one time where I was whining about the strike. It's my opinion that this isn't good for GM, not only are they suffering in the marketplace as is, but now there is the possibilty of a strike against them. Thus, the heading "When does the bad news end?"

You are the epitome of ignorance. The basis for your very first comment in this thread, as well as the second and third, is pure ignorance. You ASSUMED that the CAW was going to "blatantly break union policies" by engaging in a "wildcat strike", a presumption which you had no basis upon which to form. Then you go on to perpetuate your ignorance by saying "there will be no strike because it will make the members of their union look bad". How is that so? A union is fights for their members, whom are currently working without a labor agreement, and one doesn't look imminen

State opinions and observations as you will fellas, but please don't let this migrate towards a bashing session futher than it has.

I think were just going to have to agree to disagree on the subject of Union's and let this dog lay where it is.

i think that in most cases nowadays the union is simply a word for lazy workers to hide behind...no offense steve...my dad has some younger union friends, and they arent worth a siht...on the other hand, i know a guy who works for DCX as a UAW, and he works in awful conditions...but i still feel that in many cases, their pay is a bit much

im sorry, but a UFCW Local is the farthest thing from a real union i can think of. i worked for local 1262 UFCW, and it was a frigging joke.

as for your opinions, keep them because they mean nothing to anyone but you.

I hear ya. There's lazy workers everywhere, union or non-union. I think that has everything to do with the persons character though. I have a buddy who's in the union, he works for Sacramento County, and he has been known to milk it a little bit. He definitely does things he wouldn't necessarily do if it weren't for the protection of the union.

Your opinion on the quality of the union is irrelevant, the point made was that just because someone isn't unionized does not mean they have never been and/or have no clue about them and how they operate.

As for my opinions, you have two options, don't read em or don't respond. Deal with it.

I have a handful of non-union employees and one manager I could throw into that pot....
lol.........

I've spent quite a bit of time on several of our major airports where aviation mechanics seem to be the best at doing nothing. And we wonder why our airlines can't make money.
