I have never looked at the chrome on the 5 gens. If it's plastic chrome i dont think there is really anything you could do. I have seen a stick on chrome trim roll at walmart. I'm not sure it's exact but it may work.

If the chrome is dirty and not worn wipe it down with a microfiber cloth soaked in vinegar. Some stains can be removed using baby oil. Then wash it using blue dawn dishwashing liquid, wipe dry and buff out with your favorite chrome polish.

Is re-chroming a part really expensive??? I've never priced it out.

Have you considered useing "MOTHERS" chrome polish? along with a buffing (cloth)? (They sell kits specifically for that purpose)

Thats what I would try before priceing out a rechromeing.
I dont know of any ...Paint... thats made to stick to chrome to black them out.

Maybe just consider removeing that trim...and smoothing it out?
(removeing trim, repainting those areas)

Might be cheaper than rechromeing? especially if you do it yourself.

I'm pretty sure this is the stuff lou called plastic chrome. There is no polishing of it. Its kind of like a plastic and not a metal.

I might just paint over it. But I do like how it matches my chrome wheels and exhaust tips.

The cleaning instructions I posted is for real chrome...lol. I have no idea how it would work on plastic so if you try it you're on your own. A lot of plating shops are capable of chroming plastic. The least expensive would probably be at a local business. Shipping can get expensive if the part has any length to it plus you run the risk of it being damaged in transit.
