Default cast aluminum wheels

hi again all, this time I have a wheel question. I have a 2004 Grand Am, and it has the cast aluminum wheels on it. Well the coating is starting to bubble and peel in places. What I would like to do is get the coating off and paint them black to match my car. Anyone got any suggestions on if I can do this, and if it's possable, any ideas on how to go about doing it? Thanks all Justin

I believe you may have the same wheels I had on my 99 Grand Am. Are yours the brushed aluminum look, or the chrome look?

The "Chrome-tec" rims are the standard brushed aluminum rim with a chrome colored piece of plastic glued onto it. If the fake chrome is peeling, you could just try sanding it smooth and painting the plastic. Or if you're really ambitious, pry off the plastic altogether, and get down to the real aluminum rim. But I think that would be more trouble than it's worth if you're just going to paint it anyway.

Chris posted a link to a great how to by one of our members. If you're painting over plastic, some of the steps may be different however.
