I guess I don't understand how the merchant fees work. I had a jeweler tell me a few years back he LOVED debit cards vs credit cards, cuz a debit card only had a .5% fee per transaction, vs 2.5% for a credit card. Have things changed that much?

You are correct - banks keep having contests that make you use credit ("Your next transaction might be FREE!" says Chase..) so they can rake in the fees.

Surf shop owner told me credit takes more from him than debit.

But on the other side, you may get some of those buyer protection features on credit purchases, not debit.

When I filled up with gas yesterday, I noticed I could pay with debit inside with the guy behind the counter. But the pump only listed credit cards as acceptable forms of payment, if I wanted to pay at the pump. Of course the gas station's credit cards were being strongly encouraged.

On a side note, with the price of gas yesterday, the gas station should have bought me dinner first.

Starting to see $4 for regular on the stations just off the freeways.

Filled up with some $3.85 at one of my favorite 76 stations today.

Default Circle k

Circle k wont allow you to purchase anything on your Mastercard debit card As a credit card. It must be ran as a debit card with a pin if over 25. Saves them credit card fees. Wastes the employee's time because they have to run my car three time to break up a purchase. Ha
