The hottest cars of 2015

Ford Mustang

A new generation Ford Mustang is no small news, and 2015 is looking to be one of the most significant updates in the car's half-century history. Finally offering a modern independent rear suspension, a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (don't worry, the explosive 5.0-liter V8 is still available as well) and an unquestionably improved, aggressive exterior, the 2015 Mustang appears to ready to knock it out of the park. The only unfortunate detail is an increase in weight.

Odds of a fatal car accident largely depend on where you live

Study finds Washington, D.C., has lowest fatality rate, northern Plains states and the South the highest.

By Douglas Newcomb Mon 1:54 PM
Whether you’ll die in a traffic accident largely depends where you live, according to a recent study from the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute.

While roadway
fatalities in the U.S. have dropped 22.7 percent since 2005, UMTRI research professor Michael Sivak found a wide disparity in traffic fatality rates for individual states and the District of Columbia.

Sivak used two sets of data in his analysis: the number of road deaths by distance driven and the number relative to state population. Using these two factors, he looked at statistics for 2005 (the most recent peak) and 2012 (the most recent year for which data was available).

He then cross-referenced these statistics and concluded that if you drive in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., you have the lowest chance of dying in a traffic accident than any other state, while motorists in North Dakota, South Carolina and West Virginia have the highest chance of becoming a road fatality statistic.

Convertible drivers are older, richer and smarter than the rest of us

Analysis finds most ragtop purchasers are over 45 and have annual incomes above $175,000.

By Douglas Newcomb Thu 8:44 AM

Think of convertibles and the image that typically comes to mind is of a carefree young person, couple or group of friends driving with the top down, sunglasses on and the wind whipping through their hair. But in reality, most convertible drivers are graying, empty-nest baby boomers wearing prescription lenses and considering the returns on their 401(k) accounts.

That’s the picture that a recent Experian Automotive analysis paints of people who purchased convertibles in the first quarter of this year. By looking at vehicle registrations between January and March, the credit reporting agency found that more than 72 percent of consumers buying a ragtop during that period were more than 45 years old, whereas only 60 percent of all average new car buyers were of the same age.

And given the age of these convertible buyers, it’s not surprising that Experian also found that those who purchased a drop-top this winter in anticipation of warmer weather ahead were also wealthier, better educated and had no kids at home when compared to all other new car shoppers.

Will smart safety features put a dent in collision repair industry?

Advanced safety systems save lives, but ‘will thrash entire industries built on the fact that you crack up your car.’

By Douglas Newcomb 14 hours ago
Driver assistance systems such as forward-collision prevention that take over steering and braking have been proven to save lives and reduce injuries. But as the technology spreads to more cars and prevents more types of accidents, it also has the potential to save car owners money from collision repairs — and put a major dent in the revenue of auto body shops and other businesses that profit from crashes.

That’s the conclusion of a recent blog post by David P. Carlisle, chairman of the consulting and research firm Carlisle & Company, after analyzing trends and data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Carlisle analysis took into account four driver assist systems — forward collision warning or prevention, lane departure warning or prevention, blind spot warning and adaptive headlights — and their potential to prevent accidents.

Using IIHS data and the company’s own “mathematical modeling,” Carlisle deduced that 30 percent of all collision repairs could be avoided once the systems become available in all cars. Of course, that could take years. But Carlisle noted that the IIHS's companion research agency, the Highway Loss Data Institute, predicts that approximately 20 percent of all registered vehicles will have forward collision warning systems by 2020. This alone could prevent more than 3 million car crashes — and have a major financial impact on the collision repair industry.

Hotter Horses Lining Up: Roush Teases 2015 Ford Mustang

By Bengt Halvorson 5 hours ago

2015 Roush Mustang teaser - July 2014

It's still a few months before the 2015 Ford Mustang starts to arrive at dealerships, yet a number of established aftermarket tuners are clearly hard at work prepping even hotter versions.
The latest to tease a Mustang project is Roush Performance, which today posted the hazy profile pic above and added the name S550 in a tag.
Technical details haven't been released—or even teased—at this point; and the wheels in this picture are definitely not stock, but that's a given.
MUST WATCH: Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Hits 246 MPH On Public Road: Video
We expect a remarkably finished, well-tuned car. Ford gives a select core of tuners advanced access to its parts, and Roush has a solid history of building Mustangs with more power, plus improved handling to match—as well as a little more bodywork or trim to stand out and be recognized, yet not so much so as to be garish.
Recent Roush Mustang models have been offered in Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 levels, with the Stage 3 cars adding the most performance enhancements and appearance changes.
Check back for more details on the next Roush Mustang in the next few weeks. With the 2015 Saleen Mustang S302 that's on the way, as well as cars on the way from Steeda and Galpin Auto Sports, even in the new Mustang's first year it looks like those looking to access a little more performance will have some especially exciting options.

3 Exercises Worth the Investment

By Lacie Glover

There are many great ways to save money on fitness, diet and overall health so you can do more with fewer dollars. On the other hand, some sports and activities just seem to cost a lot to get started, and you can't afford to try them all. If you decide to put money into a new activity, it should be something that excites you and gets you pumped for improvement.

The bottom line is fitness costs are an investment in your health and longevity. Here are three ways you can get the best return on your dollar:
Running
How much you invest in running often depends on where you live. Some people enjoy year-round nice weather, making the sport free after an initial investment. Others can only run outside seasonally, and they either do other workouts the rest of the year or invest in a treadmill or gym membership in order to make it a full-time activity. The return on your running investment will depend on your commitment and dedication.
To start running outside, all you need is a great pair of shoes and appropriate, comfortable attire. The shoes should run you anywhere from $50 to $150 for a standard beginner's pair. Shoes should be replaced every 300 to 400 miles to prevent risk of pain or injury from failing support. Clothes shouldn't cost more than about $60 for full garb from an outlet such as Target or Wal-Mart. Go with fairly form-fitting, lightweight garments and moisture-wicking fabrics (especially if you sweat a lot). While these prices are subject to seasonal and location differences, both shoes and clothing can usually be found cheaply. Shop around before you invest, and consider buying items on clearance.
The payoff of running is that it's one of the most efficient exercises you can do. It's highly aerobic and engages the body's largest muscles -- those in the legs -- so the metabolism-boosting benefits of muscle building are optimized moreso than in other cardio workouts. That double whammy is especially attractive for people looking to lose weight. For those interested in improving heart health or fitness, running is one of the quickest ways to do that as well.
[Read:A Beginner's Guide to Running .]
Bicycling
In that same vein, this workout also engages large leg muscles and provides great cardio benefits. It, too, is a fairly seasonal sport but can be done indoors with the right equipment or a gym membership. Both running and bicycling offer fresh air and changing scenery. Plus, they both give you the freedom to go at your own pace -- great for those with independent spirits.
Bicycling's not quite as efficient for burning calories as running is, but the upside is that you can go longer and farther. In addition to clothes and shoes, you'll also need to buy the bike and helmet. How much you spend depends on your preferences and budget, but bikes can be found at discount stores for less than $100. If you would prefer something higher quality while staying on a budget, check out used bikes online in your area. You can probably find a nice bike for around $200. With good maintenance, bike frames can last 20 years or more.
[Read: Yes, You Can Be That Fit Co-Worker Who Bikes to Work .]
Sports lessons
It's important to distinguish lessons from fitness classes. When you take lessons in a sport such as swimming or tennis, you're learning skills and techniques. When you attended classes such as Zumba or CrossFit, you're imitating a leader or being told what to do. These classes still give you a great workout, but they aren't teaching you much that you can use in the future. Some classes, such as yoga or tai chi, do come with a little learning that can be incorporated into independent workouts, but this takes some time. Lessons, on the other hand, are meant to be temporary so once you've learned the basics, you're good to go it on your own. An added bonus is that your instructor will teach you both the sport's skills, as well as the correct form and technique. That way, you'll work more efficiently and be less likely to suffer sports injuries.
What sounds fun that you don't know a lot about? Tennis? Rock climbing? Surfing? Whatever it is, consider the investment in lessons. Chances are that if you're interested in an activity even before starting, you'll do better and stick to it. And sticking to it is the ultimate key to lifelong fitness and health.

Gen Y now buying more cars than Gen-Xers

Boomers, however, still dominate the retail automotive market.

By Paul Eisenstein of The Detroit Bureau

A new J.D. Power survey says Millennials may just want to own cars after all. In fact, they are buying new cars in greater numbers than Gen Xers.

The Detroit Bureau
While a number of recent studies have suggested that Millennials would prefer to text rather than drive, they're apparently beginning to buy cars, as well as iPads, in ever-increasing numbers.
In fact, Gen Y now is generating a larger share of U.S. new vehicle sales than older Gen Xers, according to a new survey by J.D. Power and Associates. But both groups still lag well behind Baby Boomers, who continue to be the largest group of car buyers in the U.S.
"As Gen Y consumers enter new life stages, earn higher incomes and grow their families, their ability and desire to acquire new vehicles is increasing," said Thomas King, a J.D. Power vice president.
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, there are about 80 million Millennials, which means that each year millions more are moving into the new vehicle buying demographic. Another study by consulting firm Deloitte last year found they already represent about 40% of the nation's potential car buying population — though they are still well outnumbered by Boomers when it comes to the number of new vehicles sold each year.

Separate research by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, or UMTRI, found that nearly a third of 19-year-olds hadn't gotten a driver's license, compared with just 17% of Boomers in 1983.
"Virtual contact reduces the need for actual contact," UMTRI's Michael Sivak said as one possible explanation.
But analysts have pointed to other factors, including:
  • Increasing availability of mass transit in cities where members of Gen-Y have increasingly been settling;
  • Economic realities of a generation saddled with high unemployment rates and huge student loans;
  • Indifference to driving in an era when so many of the nation's roads are over-crowded.
That said, some analysts and industry leaders have downplayed reports that Gen Y would stay out of the market. Joe Hinrichs, Ford's President of the Americas, recently told TheDetroitBureau.com that car buying was as much as anything a "life stage" issue, and that even for those Millennials living in urban centers, vehicle ownership would become increasingly critical as they aged and started families.
The new J.D. Power data seems to support that theory. Based on Power's PIN network, which tracks dealer sales trends, those born between 1977 and 1994 have collectively accounted for 26% of U.S. new vehicle retail sales this year.
That makes Gen Y a larger buying group than Gen X for the first time. Those born from 1965 to 1976 accounted for 24% of sales for the same period.
View Slideshow: 10 best cars for young drivers, 2014
Boomers, however, still dominated, commanding a 40% share of the retail automotive market this year.
That said, Power's King cautioned that automakers should not take Millennials for granted, simply waiting them out as they settle into more conventional lifestyles.
"As new-vehicle demand among Gen Y consumers increases, it will be important for automakers to respond to the needs of these consumers, not only in terms of the vehicle design, but also the marketing, sales and service experience."
Indeed, the industry has been making a number of changes in a bid to lure in a tech-savvy generation. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a new vehicle that doesn't offer a high-tech infotainment system, for example, some going so far as allowing a motorist to have Facebook postings read out in artificial speech. Chevrolet is, meanwhile, one of several makers adding 4G WiFi hotspots in many of its vehicles this year.
Whether that will be enough to bring back other reluctant Millennials remains to be seen.
