WEll..... we had a lawn mower that while our family would be gone on Sunday's to Charlotte in teh 18 wheeler, the neighbors would mow their grass with it and we'd wonder where the gas went. And this one time, someone drilled a hole in my dad's gas tank and just drained his gas that way.
I have done the siphoning. One time another neighbor (the good one) bought a new lawnmower but has just put like 8 gallons of gas in their other one... and I siphoned it for them.

I'm not proud of it, but I have siphoned before. As in full blown stealing gas. Did it the old fashion way: sucking through a tube. Damn near knocked myself out too - I really wouldn't recommend it. First you get a lot of fumes - that was the part where I started blacking out. They you get a mouth full of gas and that taste stays in your mouth for about a week. and you get a wicked headache to boot.
I don't think modern cars, with a fuel pump in the tank, siphon well anymore. You gotta get something older

Turning the thread around. I was 14 and helping stepdad with his fleet of poorly maintained vehicles. He had taken about 3 good huffs on the hose and was getting no place. Me being the smart one (?) felt that he didn't get the hose submerged and was just sucking air from the half full tank on the old Econoline van.
I offered to try and was fishing the hose around in the tank while trying to find the fluid, like putting your tongue on a straw after sipping, you can feel the pressure.
I was of course very right, first big draw got a mouthful of leaded regular. Spitting and trying to stop that firey taste I grabbed the first thing drinkable - the old man's can of Coors that he always keeps in reach while working on cars. I chugged it.
Big mistake - in addition to the effect of swallowing gas, add the effects of the beer, and the resulting gasoline burps the rest of the day.

I don't know about siphoning, but my dad has had his mower gas stolen out of containers. We have a pretty good idea of who it was. Apparently they took about half or 3/4 and refilled with water. I don't know how else to explain the quantities of water that found their way in to the tanks of his mowers.
