looking to see how long it takes for stuff to break down and what can be put into it.. preferably if you have one and know first hand

 

I would like to give it a try. But I just don't have the room for it at my current home. I'm wondering how big of a problem rodents, insects, and other "critters" are with composting.

 

Needing to get rid of a body??(JK) It takes a while for stuff to break down, it all depends on what youre putting in it. You will have a problem with pests unless you controle them and contorlling them means polluting the ground. As for what you can put in it, pretty much anything organtic. What exactly are you wanting to put in it, just leaves and such? But yeah, it does take a while for stuff to break down and there is a certain level of odor that it produces.

 

well we have a box in the back without a bottom on it cause i know the worms and microorganisms break it down. stuff im looking to put in it are leaves, and some food products.. but all kinds of websites are giving me different answers.. didnt know if someone on here does it so they could tell me first hand

 

Well i used to have 2 and it just took forever for the stuff to break down, yeah, the worms and such are what breaks the stuff down the most.

 

we have a fairly big mound out in the back corner of our property that acts as a compost pile, its mostly leaves, ashes from our woodstove, and grass clippings. problem is, it takes FOREVER for the leaves to turn into any kind of decent soil for planting & such, and if you put food in it the animals will follow. depending on the size of your property it could work in a closed style box, but for our 2 ish acres of leaves its too much to have an enclosure. and the only way to speed up how quick it composts is to get out there with a pitchfork and stir the pile every so often. my grandparents were big into composting for their gardens ( italian family = lots of homegrown food ), and i think they just had bottemless can with foodstuff in it. i know it worked well for them.

 

yeah, were sittin on 2 to 2.5 acres. were just looking to have some nice soil for our garden. most of the leaves we burn, but we put a few in there to start and some coffee grounds, filters.. and stuff. skylark... do you know what all your grandparents put in thier compost pile? im just trying to find out what all breaks down the fastest.. like i heard ashes are not good because of alkaline they have when burnt.

Several of the senior citizens around me visit the MCF & read our posts (Threads) Some call us the Monte Carlo Soaps.....They know all our active member's, and pray for those that are having problems...I love them `all, and they have helped me during my journey. One senior (about 82 years old) read your Thread Question: any1 have compost pile? and he responded
"Yes, I have one, and I married her" LOL

He's going to pay for it, if his wife reads this
