Advice From The Cops
Do not leave anything visible in your cars.
Lock the doors, and don't take for granted your auto is safe just because you're parked at the mall.
The local paper says the cops reported 28 auto break-ins last night.
So if you have gifts in your car, don't leave them in the open for all to see.

That's good advice all year long. Ive seen people leave there Cell phone or GPS with the window open. Even when your just running in to the gas station, it only takes a second for someone to grab your stuff.

In reality this should be common sense, friend of mine had his laptop stolen out of his car cause it was sitting on the front seat. I ALWAYS hide my electronics, whether its my gps, camera or just my scanner. and i almost always lock my doors unless i'm someplace i trust. I do on ocasion leave my car running while i run in a store, but i lock it and use the spare key in my wallet.

I totally agree that it seems like common sense. I rarely leave my car unlocked or have it sitting with the windows down unless I'm working on something. I hate seeing someone just leave their windows down in a parking lot especially with a gps or cellphone etc. just sitting there.

Normally I dont carry anything worth stealing, everything in my cars interior is stock, so all they could steal is my front speakers, which you cant tell aren't stock.
I would say the key is, get your car to the point you would feel leaving it unlocked safely, and then still lock it.
