Default 5th generation monte, motor question

hi, how many different engines were offered during this generation
i know there were atleast 2 but i saw a post earlier that i was confused about!!!

**I'm not a fan of the Z34 engines (LQ1) before they went to the L36...
Just saying. They are a pain in the *** to work on. (IMO) (from mike, aka chibiblacksheep)

*3.l motor

*z34 3.8 motor, were there two different z34 motors availabe for this??

also i would like to know which if there were 2 different z34's which one was a better motor?

i've been looking for a 5th gen monte for a little while and i'm not sure which is the best/easier motor to work on for what i'm considering? i'm looking for a second monte for mainly driving during the winter months! btw not just a winter beater, but a nice car for me to get around in and also enjoy as much as i do with my 2006 monte!

thank you all for all your great thoughts on my posts, it is nice to know people are always here to help!!!!

I'll leave it to people who know the 5th gens better. But personally, I would go with a 98 or 99 Z34 with the 3.8 engine.

If I could afford to get a second car as a daily driver, I would love to have a 98 or 99 Z34. I like the look of them.

There were 3 different motors in the 5th Gen.

from 95-99, the LS had the 3.1 (headgasket issues very common)
95-97, the Z34 had a 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) (not a good aftermarket, hard to work on, but plenty powerful, more base HP than the L36.
98-99, the Z34 switched over to the 3.8 NA (L36) You know that engine. lol

I should also mention that the LS models of the 5th gen had the crappier 4t60e Transmission.
The 98-99 Z34 had the 4t65e.
