2008 Chevrolet Impala 50th Anniversary Edition -

A front-drive V-6 Impala to recall glory days of the past.

December2007

The Impalas of today are a far cry from their rear-wheel-drive forebears such as the first stand-alone 1959 model with a 355-hp, 348-cubic-inch V-8 or even the 1961 “SS” model that tore up drag strips with a 409-inch V-8 that inspired the Beach Boys’ song “409.” Gone, too, are the coupe and convertible models that used to fill Chevy dealerships.
But in a wave of nostalgia, Chevy plans to introduce the Impala 50th Anniversary Edition at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
The anniversary model uses the same 3.5-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic of the regular Impala LT on which it’s based. But with only 211 horsepower powering the front wheels, there’s little similarity to Impalas of yore.

That didn’t stop Chevrolet from increasing the sporting factor. The anniversary model gets anti-lock brakes (they’re only optional on the LT) and the FE3 sport suspension normally reserved for the Impala SS. A trunk spoiler and 18-inch chrome wheels add to the sporting image.
It’ll be hard to miss these anniversary Impalas with all their nostalgic touches. The doorsill plates, the C-pillars, and the front headrests wear “50th Anniversary” badges. The car also gets two-tone leather seats and ebony carpeting and floor mats.
So, essentially, aside from an eight-way power driver’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, this special Impala is an LT with some extra options.
The 50th Anniversary model will go on sale this spring, a last hurrah of sorts before the next-gen Impala potentially shifts to GM’s Zeta global rear-wheel-drive architecture, a move that has been in question following program delays over concerns about new fuel-economy and emissions standards.

I guess a two door is out of the question for Chevrolet in a Mid-Sized car. Meanwhile the Europeans and Japanese continue to build and sell two doors in large volumes. I often wonder where these GM exectutives thinking comes from.

It ain't located atop their shoulders if you're wondering?

Why no mention of the '58 Impala? That's wherelater yearsall came from.

When I was a teenager a friend had a '58 with a 348 under the hood someone gave him. I mean FREE! A complete, running car.

Not a spot of rust on the car anywhere. Back then everyone considered '58s the ugly step child no one wanted.

Now they saw the '58s and even some '59s are bringing in the same money the Tri-5s are. (scarey if you ask me)

[align=center]Hi RJ, I thought the same thing when I read the article.
I thought for sure they would write about the 1958 Impala.
Guess they were to busy Smok'in Zomething : )

[:-]

1958 Chevy Impala Coupe
1958 was the first year for the Impala and it was considered a part of the Bel Air model line up.

This Sport Coupe 2 door hardtop has a 348 cubic inch Tri-Power V8 engine and auto transmission.
It also has power steering and windows, tissue dispenser, the original jack and two speed windshield wipers with washers.

The "air scoops" just ahead of the rear wheels were not actually functional, but they look great! These were an Impala exclusive in the Chevy lineup.

Fender skirts, dual antennas, a continental kit for the spare tire and fake exhaust ports just behind the rear wheels dress up this 1958 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe.

2008 Chevy Impala 50th Anniversary Edition coming to Detroit

The Chevy Impala is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, and to commemorate the occasion the Bowtie division is offering up a badge-and-trim special edition. What you have here is the garden-variety Impala LT, upgraded for anniversary-edition duty with an FE3 sport suspension, 18-inch alloys, commemorative "50th" Impala badges and a rear spoiler. Inside, the seats are leather and two-toned, with eight-way adjustability for the driver and anniversary embroidery on the headrests. Other edition-specific features include a multifunction steering wheel wrapped in contrast-stitched leather, slightly fancier floormats, and doorsill plates sporting the anniversary logo. It comes in red or black and is, without question, the single most unexciting car GM will be introducing at next month's Detroit Auto Show.

In the mid-1980s, the good friend I bought my 150 Handyman 2-door Wagon from once owned a '58 Chevy Nomad. In 1958 Nomads were designed as 4-door Wagons. Not the 2-door they'd been for the previous 3 years.

This friend wanted to trade me even up this '58 Nomad for my "windowed" '57 Sedan Delivery. He kept at it too. He was planning on trading my "windowed" Delivery off to another guy for a vehicle he really wanted.

As complete and lack of rust this '58 Nomad was, it was not equal to my 'windowed" Sedan Delivery.

In the end........... I ended up with my "windowed" Delivery AND his Handyman Wagon.

PS. I just realized March 29, 2008 I've owned this 150 Handyman Wagon for 20 years.

Well as is becoming customary with GM, the 50th anniversary model is going to be an appearance package with no real extra bang. At least that's the info we have now. Hopefully, if GM is smart, they'll surprise everyone and make a limited edition 50th anniversary V8 RWD with a little bit of retro styling. Of course I'm dreaming now, but one can dream can't he?
