2010 SLP ZL575 Camaro
Program #2910

It's been a great year for the Camaro fans on our staff. First we tested the surprising 2010 Camaro V6. Next, we cut loose the burnouts in the V8 Camaro SS. For Detroit muscle car fanatics, what more could we ask for? Well, the wizards at SLP Performance Parts have an answer. They call it the ZL575. We call it a supercharged throwback of epic proportions.
SLP has been turning GM cars into track-caliber dealer-ready super tuners for almost two decades. Most recently, we put their Pontiac G8 based Firehawk through its paces, a sedan that really blew us away.
Now, SLP is mounting that same gusto for the return of the Camaro, and the resulting 2010 SLP ZL575 supercharged Camaro delivers some serious whiplash potential.
Starting with a stock Camaro SS, the New Jersey-based outfit plans to build just 500 of these monsters. Our tester is the prototype, and one of 250 6-speed manually equipped ZL575s. The other 250 are automatics dubbed ZL550.
If you haven't guessed it already, those numbers mean horsepower. Output from our ZL575's supercharged 6.2-liter aluminum block V8 jumps from the stock SS 426 horsepower to 575; torque from 420 pound-feet to an asphalt grinding 550 at 3650 rpm.
Like the G8 Firehawk, the ZL's magic involves the addition of a high-output supercharger akin to the Corvette ZR-1, and a power-enhancing Cold Air Induction System.
Putting the pedal down, our ZL575 rocketed from 0 to 60 in a blurring 3.8 seconds on street tires. That's over a second faster than the SS, and faster than our last Porsche 911 Turbo. Likewise, the quarter mile disappeared in 11.8 seconds at 121 miles per hour. When refitted with street-legal drag radials, the ZL bites down and leaps off the line with almost no wheel spin. There's a slight drop-off between gears 3 and 4, as the clutch is muscle-car stiff.
This Camaro's deep, powerful growl is the result of SLP's specially tuned exhaust system.
But even with so much power, the ZL will not overwhelm enthusiasts at the strip or on the street.
For maximizing cornering prowess, our ZL575 benefited from a performance-tuned sport suspension spring package. The progressive rate springs lowered the chassis one inch, and were firmed up to be on par with NASCAR and Formula 1 calibrations. There's also an adjustable sway bar package to flatten out handling even further.
Like all mods of the new Camaro, you feel the car's size and weight. Yet response is immediate, and again very manageable-decidedly not like muscle cars of old.
Rather, like an NFL linebacker, it handles its heft with sheer athleticism. Steering is quick and well-weighted with tons of feedback. Stock Pirelli tires are fitted to new SLP 20-inch 5 spoke alloys, where a red stripe pays homage to the '67 Camaro's factory tires.
Optional, but definitely warranted, is the Brembo Sport Disc Package. For even more stopping power, you can opt for the Brembo GT Front Brakes with 6-piston calipers. With this option, the top speed limiter is raised from 155 to 190 miles per hour.
With both brake packages, a hard stop from 60 to 0 averaged an impressive 110 feet, with fade never an issue. This car just hunkers down and sticks to the pavement.
Exterior enhancements to the ZL575 are unique and purposeful, headlined by a performance hood with a functional air scoop.
Styling cues include an available SS badge to replace the grille's stock bowtie, rear quarter panel gill inserts, a taller body-color rear spoiler, a heritage-style rear black-out panel, and 4-inch stainless steel exhaust tips.
ZL575 badges on the decklid and fenders indicate the car's profound power.
With the Camaro's stock cockpit already heavy on heritage, ZL enhancements are mostly limited to embroidered headrests and floormats and a dash plaque that shows the vehicle's place in the small production run.
Now for the bottom line. The ZL575 comes in at $57,995-that's about $23,000 over a stock 2010 Camaro SS. The optional Brembo brake packages add another $6,485. That may seem high at first, but in terms of true performance value, few other efforts come close. SLP continues its streak of turning GM muscle cars into mind-blowing speed machines. The 2010 ZL575 supercharged Camaro takes all the throwback appeal of the new Camaro and infuses it with a level of performance rarely seen for under six figures. With this Detroit pony car, you'll have a blast turning heads where ever you hit the gas.

Creating a new generation of Classics

Camaro®, arguably one of the most legendary names in the history of late-model Chevrolet Muscle Cars, is once again the basis for limited-edition Specialty Vehicles from SLP; the SS-based supercharged ZL550 and ZL575, the SS-based normally-aspirated ZL454 and ZL427, and the RS-based ZL327 Camaro!
Following in the footsteps of the 40,000+ fourth generation Camaro SS® specialty vehicles SLP produced for GM and its dealers is a daunting challenge. But one test drive will convince skeptics that these new ZL Camaro specialty vehicles have recaptured and refined the special magic the SLP name offers.
The 2010 ZL Camaros from SLP are destined to become legendary Camaro classics!

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS
Program #2906

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is turning out to be one of the best received Detroit-bred designs in recent memory. As for us, we never miss a chance to drive one, and then drive it again. We spent a delightful couple of weeks with a Camaro V6 during summer vacation. And now, its big V8 brother, the SS, has arrived for a thorough MotorWeek experience. So, let the classic-muscle times roll once more.
Getting right down to it, what makes this 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS oh-so special is the beast that lurks within. Actually, there's a choice of two animals here – one tied to a robust 6-speed manual, and the other to a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic.
Both are massive 6.2-liter aluminum block pushrod V8s, derived from the engine that debuted in the 2008 Corvette.
For the manual, it's the LS3. This one rates a stronger 426 horsepower and heartily out stomps both the Ford Mustang GT's 315 and the Dodge Challenger R/T's 376 horses. Torque comes in at 420 pound-feet. You'd have to upgrade to the much pricier Mustang Cobra and Challenger SRT8 to beat the SS stats.
The L99 mates to the automatic, rated at a not-too-stingy 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It includes Active Fuel Management, which shuts down 4 of 8 cylinders for more efficient interstate cruising.
Given a choice for a track test, we naturally opted for the LS3, which exploded from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds flat and shotgunned through the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds at 109 miles per hour. These numbers edge out both rivals, if just barely.
Our "Super Sport" proved a performance powerhouse. It roars off the line with the help of a Launch Control sequence, reacting with a super throaty muscle car exhaust roar. From there, it thunders down the line with the help of quick revs, and strong, solid shifts. We couldn't help grinning from ear to ear.
Like the V6, cornering dynamics come from the same platform used for the Pontiac G8 with a spry all-independent suspension using modern multi-link rear geometry. Sport mode further firms things up, and stabilizer bars on the SS are larger than those on the V6.
The result is sharp turn ins, a very planted feel, and still very pleasant ride. You do feel its size and weight, but composure is retained. We call it "manageable heft." The variable ratio steering is nicely weighted, but we wish it were a little faster. Overall, the SS is not quite a flick-of-the-wrist Porsche type, but still very impressive and fun for a mass-market coupe.
And to keep things in check, all 2010 Camaros sport standard traction and stability control.
Four-wheel disc brakes, too; but the SS upgrades to four-piston fixed Brembo front and rear calipers. Super stable halts from 60 averaged a mere 112 feet with no drama. The racecar-like pedal was rock hard with zero vibration.
We said it before and we'll say it now...design-wise, this car is an extremely well-executed modern interpretation of the classic '69 Camaro.
Sharing the same retro muscle car styling as the V6, our SS adds badging as well as a couple of extra performance cues--a slot for the high rise hood, and a lower, larger front air intake.
And out back, the SS exhaust tips are wider than the ones on the V6.
SS wheel offerings are also larger at 19 and 20 inches. Special 21-inch wheels are available as a dealer accessory.
The inside, too, is almost identical to the V6 Camaro. The retro-theme four seat cabin with right angle gauge housings, separate center floor consoles, and even a floaty needle in the Speedo. One aspect of the 60s we wish wasn't here are the cheap-to-touch plastics. Also, Camaro's hunkered-down styling dictated short side glass that makes some feel very claustrophobic. The optional sunroof helps.
But as we scanned the "SS" markings on the sport seat headrests and at the base of the dished-out steering wheel, we were instantly forgiving.
The SS also stands out with a standard 9-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system.
Normally, we wouldn't worry about the fuel efficiency of such a high-performance machine, but in this case, it's warranted.
Government Fuel Economy ratings for our manual SS are 16 city/24 highway on Regular gas. With an automatic, the highway number notches up to 25. We saw 20.7 miles per gallon, fairly impressive for a 400-plus-horsepower machine.
Pricewise, the Camaro SS has a base sticker of $31,595, about an $8000 premium over the V6. And that's also higher than its Detroit rivals.
It may be late in the zero decade, but the Detroit muscle car resurgence is going full bore. Along with Mustang and Challenger, the 2010 Camaro SS relives the glory days like no one imagined. This pony car appeals to all our senses with its nostalgia, performance, and unbelievable looks. So for a real taste of old school American muscle, there's nothing finer.

You know I have to say I respect those who have fallen in love with the new Camaro but I personaly haven't, Having seen the originals driven out the show room and a '68 owned by my older brother in my opinion they missed the mark as far as "stying" goe's. performance wise they sound increadable but I'm sorry the retro look could have looked much sleeker. to me they appear to bulky. if I were to spend the cash on a retro I would simply find a original core and upgrade it.body stlle of the new camaro to me looks like a two door challenger...it blows and falls short to get my thumbs up. I know I'm in the minority but I did want to express my opinion.

Hey Jarhead, how about one of these? http://www.londonautosales.net/index...il&pid=GERALD1 Kind of hard to tell it's an 02 unless you look pretty close. Interior and windshield are the only real dead give aways.

I do like the new Camaros. Don't think Chevy was trying to go dead on, think they wanted to pay homage to the style, try to be more modern... Some things they hit, others they missed but overall I think it's a sharp car. I believe Ford and Dodge did a much better job at hitting it with the Mustang and the Challenger (though the Challenger needs some chrome bumpers, IMO).

I wouldn't turn down anything coming out of SLP, those things look pretty tough!
