More Car News:Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport breaks production-car top-speed mark

Posted 7/6/2010 4:45 PM

Although not scheduled to be shown publicly until the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance in August, Bugatti just couldn't wait to make news with what's expected to be the final iteration of its spectacular -- and spectacularly expensive -- supercar, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. Unlike the standard model that has its quad-turbocharged W16 engine tuned to produce a mere 1,001 horsepower, this limited-edition Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport boasts 1,183 horses on call thanks to its even larger array of T-chargers and intercooler units. Combined with other Super Sport-specific modifications, that extra muscle was enough to take this carbon-fiber and orange exhilarator to a new two-way, top-speed mark for production cars of 267.91 mph.
In addition to handily topping the standard Veyron 16.4's best of 253.76 mph, the Super Sport also eclipsed the previously recognized world speed mark of 256.23-mph figure set in 2007 by a Shelby SuperCars Ultimate Aero. The record run was took place on the 12.4-mile high-banked oval at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test facility before representatives of both the German TUV (Technical Inspection Agency) and the Guinness Book of World Records.
Sleeker and better handling, too
While adding power was one key to the stellar performance of this new Super Sport variant, numerous other improvements to the standard Veyron 16.4 also make it quicker and more agile as well as more aerodynamic. Even lighter weight carbon-fiber bodywork helps cut curb weight by 110 pounds, while new air ducts on the fenders and roof plus a revamped rear double-plane diffuser allow it to slice through the air more cleanly. Finally, comprehensive suspension upgrades endow the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport with greater straight-line stability and help generate up to 1.4g of lateral force when cornering.
Production of the Super Sport will begin this autumn at Bugatti's factory in Molsheim, France, alongside the current Veyron 16.4 and Grand Sport models. The first five cars -- known as the World Record Edition set---will be finished in the special black exposed carbon and orange finish that adorns their illustrious predecessor. While those units have already been spoken for, it's still possible to order one of the remaining 25 that will constitute the remainder of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport buildout. Although pricing has yet to be revealed, expect to see each of these ultra Veyron's command in excess of $2 million.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport Sets Land-Speed Mark

Published Jul 6, 2010

Just the Facts:
  • Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport sets a new land-speed record for production cars.
  • The supercar hit 267.8 mph at VW's German test track.
  • Guinness World Records officials were on hand to witness and verify the record-setting run.

EHRA-LESSIEN, Germany — As the Bugatti Veyron nears the end of a five-year production run, parent Volkswagen has crafted a brilliant finish for its $1-million-plus supercar: A final, ultra-exotic edition of the Veyron 16.4, appropriately dubbed the Super Sport, has just set a new world land-speed record for production cars of 431 km/h — a blistering 267.8 mph.
Representatives from Germany's official TUV and, of course, Guinness World Records were on hand to witness and verify the record-setting run at VW's test track here, just outside the company's Wolfsburg headquarters. Behind the wheel of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport was Pierre Henri Raphanel, Bugatti's "pilote officiel."
VW is billing the Super Sport as "the climax of the Veyron series," and that seems like a fitting description for what appears to be the ultimate — no, the extreme — Bugatti.
VW has managed to boost output of the 8.0-liter W16 engine to 1,183 horsepower and torque to 1,106 pound-feet through a variety of enhancements, notably the application of four larger turbochargers and intercoolers. Power is fed to all four wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.
Chassis developments include beefier stabilizer bars, racing-type shocks and greater spring travel. VW said a revised carbon-composite monocoque has greater structural rigidity and is lighter in weight. The carbon-fiber skin, painted orange and black on the record-setting car, can be ordered in exposed carbon covered in clear lacquer.
To improve airflow and cooling, VW also tweaked the car's exterior, installing two NACA ducts in the roof, expanding the front air intakes and adding a double diffuser in the rear.
VW said the top speed on the production Super Sport will be electronically limited to only 258 mph "to protect the tires."
The Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will make its public debut next month at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and goes into production this fall at Molsheim, France. The first five cars off the line will be configured identically to the land speed record car and finished in orange with black exposed carbon.

LOL If you were to get a tiny little fender bender in that Bugatti, and by chance cracked one of the headlight lens, take a guess how much a new housing is?? Now its not like I know, but just think what kinda bill you would have just from a headlight. i wonder what the insurance would run you every six months?

First Look: 2011 Aston Martin DB9

Posted 6/28/2010 4:20 PM

Intent on adding even more charm and capability to its elegantly exhilarating luxury grand tourer, Aston Martin has announced the most comprehensive upgrading regimen for its DB9 line since the model was introduced in 2003. Both the 2011 Aston Martin Coupe and Volante Convertible benefit from a host of subtle but effective cosmetic and functional enhancements that Aston Martin's Product Development Director, Ian Minards, "highlights the DB9's qualities as a true sporting GT and underlining its role as the backbone car of our range."
The DB9's exterior refresh starts with a recontoured front fascia and reshaped headlamp bezels complemented by a new bright finish radiator grille and bolder lower intakes filled with new bright hexagonal mesh. Other changes bring more deeply-drawn side sills, silver brake calipers and clear rear taillamp lenses all set off by new 20-spoke diamond turned alloy wheels. Inside, the this affable Aston retains its bounty of comfort and convenience features but adds Double Apex alloy trim to the options mix along with its killer Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium audio upgrade.
While a 470-horsepower/6.0-liter V12 carries over as the 190-mph DB9's sole motivator -- as does the choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or optional paddle-shifted six-speed Touchtronic dual-clutch gearbox -- the car's conventional suspension setup has been replaced by Aston Martin's well-proven Adaptive Damping System. Similar to the ADS package currently used on the firm's more performance oriented DBS and Rapide models, it constantly monitors and optimizes the shock absorber setting for any given road condition and can be switched between its Comfort and Sport modes at the touch of a button on the center console. Although Aston Martin decided that the fitment of ADS eliminated the need for a separate Sport Package upgrade, it still plans to offer a unique Sport design alloy wheel for the both DB9 models.
The 2011 Aston Martin DB9 Coupe and Volante Convertible are scheduled to arrive in dealers here sometime during the fourth quarter. Pricing will be released closer to their actual on-sale dates.

A farewell to fangs: Dodge builds its last Viper

Posted 7/7/2010 4:30 PM

Last week marked the end of the road for one of the most unrepentantly aggressive all-American muscle cars ever produced. Amid a gathering of more than 400 of its dedicated fans from the Motor City Viper Club and the Viper Club of America, the last 2010 Dodge Viper rolled off of the production line at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, a facility that has been home since the car went into production in 1992.
In a year that has seen more Viper special edition variants produced than ever before, the last of the 500 cars built as 2010 models proved to be the most distinctive. This Ultimate SRT10 Coupe, which reflected a collaborative effort between the buyer, Mid-South Viper Club of America member D'Ann Rauh, and the Dodge Design team, resulted in an exterior done in custom bronzed gold paint set off by copper stripes adorned with a number of "Viper-significant" race circuit track maps. As a final touch, the car is fitted with five-spoke forged-aluminum wheels custom painted in dark graphite. Inside, the last Viper's one-off interior also has dark graphite leather trim along with several other unique touches.
Dodge Brand President and CEO Ralph Gilles and Conner Avenue plant manager Shelly Brown Gordon were on hand to present long-time Viper fanatic D'Ann Rauh and her husband Wayne with this unique final edition. The Rauhs, who live in Arp, Texas, currently lay claim to being proprietors of the ultimate snake pit. Their collection of more than 40 Vipers stands as the recognized world's largest personal collection of these Dodge supercars.
