To test the performance of Chevrolets brand-new Corvette ZR1, videographer Jay McNally and I returned to GMs Milford Proving Grounds where earlier wed been allocated three hours with an early pre-production car. At our disposal: a Victory Red ZR1 with optional chrome wheels and fully loaded with the 3ZR package. Service techs at GM set the tire pressures and let us at it. Slideshow >>We tested acceleration on what is called the Military Straight. Its a two-way road thats over a mile in length with turn-around loops at each end. It took about 10 runs but I managed to click off a 0โ€“60 mph blast of 3.4 seconds. Acceleration testing isnt typically a terribly difficult thing; however with the chilly weather there wasnt an easy way to get heat in the tires. Thus, there wasnt as much traction as we wanted, and the cold air compounded the situation by making more power. As it was, I had difficulty finding grip in 1st gear both at the initial clutch drop on launch and again near redline. Full throttle at near the top of 1st would break the rear tires loose. For a fast run it was necessary to roll into the throttle all the way through 1st gear. I suspect with warmer weather there could be another 0.2 sec. shaved off the acceleration times as full throttle could be applied. Swapping gears is easy with the Tremec TR6060 transmission and twin-disc clutch. I didnt think twice about what gear the ZR1 was in; it just went naturally from gear to gear. With the car having 638 bhp, Id have expected the gear lever to feel heavier. No speed shifting was used for our testing, but I did it a few times and found the gearbox sturdy enough to handle it. However, a 1โ€“2 speed shift will always break the rear tires loose big time. This may be part of the reason that a no-lift shift feature hasnt been integrated into the ZR1. Nor is there a launch control feature; however, this could arrive on a later model. It would surely help, as a slight lapse in concentration can result in lots of tire smoke. [:-]Brake testing was completed at the same location. Six brake stops invoking full ABS were performed; two sets of three from both 80 and 60 mph. The results in our data panel are the average of the three. There isnt much to note about the ABS stops, apart from the short distances. The brakes function well beyond what is necessary on a street car. The pedal is rock solid and theres never the slightest bit of fade. Whats more, they are easy to modulate at the limit and are gloriously confidence-inspiring. Slideshow >>Skidpad and slalom tests were both performed on what is called the Black Lake, a vast expanse of tarmac where GM does a variety of limit handling exercises. Skidpad testing involves driving in a circle and measuring the rate of lateral acceleration, done in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. The ZR1 actually pulled 1.12g clockwise and 1.08g in the other direction โ€” the average being an impressive 1.10g. The Viper ACR with massive Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires is the only car in our Road Test Summary that beats it. The ZR1 ties the ACR with its 73.4-mph slalom speed, a number that beats a Ferrari Enzo. The slalom is a good place to really learn how the car behaves because its all about high-speed transitions. The test is performed from a speed of 75 mph. You dive past the first slalom cone while lightly on the brakes. The pedal pressure is light and its easy to transfer weight forward, just enough to give the front tires extra grip for turn-in. The steering wheel requires a slight flick back to thread through the next gate, and there is no slop, just a change in the cars direction. In most cars, this is where the rear end would step out, and necessitate a steering correction. The ZR1, with its Magnetic Ride Control suspension, needs none of that. It inspires you to push harder, moving the relatively wide car back and forth through the cones quicker than expected. Only with heavy throttle does the rear end lose grip. If the Z06 is a steal, then the ZR1 borders on grand larceny. You can`t get close to this level of performance without driving a wannabe race car or wiping out your bank account on something overly exotic. Some of us can only dream of owning a ZR1, so if youre among the lucky few who can, I suggest you dont hesitate to get your order in as production will be limited to 2000 cars per year.[X(][X(]

NOW you are talking! Good old AMERICAN muscle! King of the hill! Is there more powerful? Yes. Faster? yes. But best bang for the big buck, the ZR1 HAS to be KING OF THE HILL! Is GM dead and gone? NOT A CHANCE! Will they re-organize? They MUST! They are not keeping up with the demands. They have been in cahoots with the oil companies for too long. We want QUALITY cars, alternative fuels, muscle cars, and on and on. They keep providing the same old crap you can get at any dealer, just a different label. And what about QUALITY service. THAT is SERIOUSLY hurting them.
HERE is something unique. One of a kind American muscle, AMERICAN being the key word. People have gotten used to buying the foreign cars, because of the quality, and or speed. This car has it all, and compared to the other vehicles in its class, it's also an affordable price. And IMO, the looks are as good or BETTER than many of the foreign competitors. And the sound of that large V8, WOW!

GO CHEVY! KING OF THE HILL!

2009 ZR1 and LS9 Engine Specs, Details and Pictures
GM announces that the 2009 Corvette ZR1 will be powered by their most powerful production engine ever

When it arrives next summer, the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the most powerful and fastest production car ever produced by General Motors, with performance enabled by a new, supercharged 6.2L LS9 small-block V-8 engine.
Incorporating the engineering experience already found in the Corvette Z06's LS7 engine and the new-for-2008 6.2L LS3 of the Corvette, GM Powertrain is targeting 100 horsepower per liter for the LS9, or 620 horsepower (462 kW), and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque (807 Nm); final SAE-certified power levels will be available in early March 2008.
It is, indeed, the ultimate small-block engine for the ultimate Corvette.

"When you experience the LS9 in the Corvette ZR1, the terms 'performance' and 'refinement' take on a new meaning," said Tom Stephens, group vice president for GM Powertrain and Quality. "The LS9 demonstrates an outstanding performance range, with smooth driveability at low speeds, and surprisingly fierce performance when the customer wants more power."
The enabler of the LS9's performance is a new, large positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger - with a unique four-lobe design - developed for the engine by Eaton. It is teamed with an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for maximum performance. The LS9 represents the first of several new, supercharged small-block engines that will be introduced in GM vehicles in the near future, each using superchargers of similar design.
"The small-block V-8 once again demonstrates its boundless horsepower potential, versatile design and an architecture with proven quality, durability and reliability," said Stephens. "We haven't yet realized the small-block's performance potential."

Performance range
More than just its tremendous peak horsepower and torque numbers, the supercharged LS9 makes big power at lower rpm and carries it in a wide arc to 6,600 rpm. GM Powertrain testing shows the engine makes approximately 300 horsepower (224 kW) at 3,000 rpm and nearly 320 lb.-ft. of torque (434 Nm) at only 1,000 rpm. Torque tops 585 lb.-ft. (793 Nm) at about the 4,000-rpm mark, while horsepower peaks at 6,500 rpm. The engine produces 90 percent of peak torque from 2,600 rpm to 6,000 rpm.

Heavy-duty and lightweight reciprocating components enable the engine's confident high-rpm performance, while the large-displacement Eaton supercharger pushes enough air to help the engine maintain power through the upper levels of the rpm band.
"The sixth-generation design of the supercharger expands the 'sweet zone' of the compressor's effectiveness, broadening it to help make power lower in the rpm band," said Ron Meegan, assistant chief engineer. "To put it simply, the low-end torque is amazing."
The LS9 is assembled by hand at GM's Performance Build Center, a unique, small-volume engine production facility in Wixom, Mich., that also builds the Corvette Z06's LS7 engine and other high-performance GM production engines.

Cylinder Block and Reciprocating Assembly Details
The LS9's aluminum cylinder block features steel, six-bolt main bearing caps, with enlarged vent windows in the second and third bulkheads for enhanced bay to bay breathing. Cast iron cylinder liners - measuring 4.06 inches (103.25 mm) in bore diameter - are inserted in the aluminum block and they are finish-bored and honed with a deck plate installed. The deck plate simulates the pressure and minute dimensional variances applied to the block when the cylinder heads are installed, ensuring a higher degree of accuracy that promotes maximum cylinder head sealing, piston ring fit and overall engine performance.

Nestled inside the cylinder block is a forged steel crankshaft that delivers the LS9's 3.62-inch (92 mm) stroke. It features a smaller-diameter ignition-triggering reluctor wheel and a nine-bolt flange - the outer face of the crankshaft on which the flywheel is mounted - that provides more clamping strength. Other non-supercharged 6.2L engines, such as the base Corvette's LS3, have a six-bolt flange. A torsional damper mounted to the front of the crankshaft features a keyway and friction washer, which also is designed to support the engine's high loads.
Attached to the crankshaft is a set of titanium connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons, which, when combined with the cylinder heads, delivers a 9.1:1 compression ratio. This combination is extremely durable and lightweight, enabling the LS9's high-rpm capability.

As a recently "widowed" Corvette owner and enthusiast I have followed the development of this car for 2 years. Initially called "Blue Devil", the info coming out of GM was shrouded in secrecy and misinformation.
As awesome as this car is, it's introduction immediately devalued the already high priced and more available Z06. I know of someone who put down a 25 grand pre order deposit on a ZR1 2 years ago and when his dealer called him recently to let him know it had arrived, he discovered upon arrival that they wanted 45 grand OVER MSRP. He walked away from the place in disgust.
Would I like to own this car? Absolutely. Having had the privilege of driving both a C5 and C6 Z06, I can't even imagine what another 100+ HP would feel like. This is similar to what GM did with the C4 ZR1. The ZR1 option in 1990 was an additional 35K over the base price of the standard Corvette. Niche cars are nice and this is definitely a niche car. Most will probably become garage queens by those who can afford it.
Still in all, GM has taken engineering to a whole new level with this baby. My philosophy is "drive it like you stole it" and I hate to see cars like this become nothing more then someones conversation piece sitting in climate controlled garages where the only mileage the car sees is when it's moved to allow the floor to be waxed.

Just my humble 2 cents.

With this ZR1, Camaro (anyone see MotorTrend's review of the base V6? Said it felt nothing like entry level), Pontiac's new G8 line, and Caddy's Arts and Science styling maybe GM will start giving us quality cars in order to stay in business.

I really wish I could just drive a ZR1 for once, but at over $100k I think I'll stick to my Camaro dreams as they are much more realistic.

Having dreams for cars like these are great. But we found out something this year that I didn't see coming! I bought LadyT her 07 Solstice GXP for Christmas last year. Her daily driver 99 Silverado Z71 had over 190,000 miles on it, was in good shape, but THATS a LOT of miles, I don't care how you look at it! So I bought her the Solstice as another daily driver. Something fun. (She ALSO her her 82 Olds Regency 2 dr coupe, but it's our Sunday go to Church car mainly.)

We have a family comradery here on the MCF, and with other Monte forums, and have several meet and greets around, along with the Nationals. The GM Kappa cars, Solstice and Sky, also, like many car groups, have their get togethers. Vette owners (at least around here) get together to figure out where to have the next get together for more coffee. Coffee shops. Lunchs. PERIOD!

The Kappa group gets together to do driving runs, like the #1 soprt car and sport bike road in America, "The Tail of the Dragon", located on the SW corner of the Smokey Mountains. 318 curves in 11 miles! WOW! LadyT looked like this [:'(] several times. She SCREAMED at me when she saw triple digit speeds showing up on the GPS. Another road is the 555 in NE Ohio. There are others, I'm sure, like the run we did at the SE Regionals in Lexington.

We meet, greet, show, then BEAT on our cars, also. Not all of us, but some. But what I've seen, not only here with the Montes ("What have you done to mod' your Monte") is the level of modding done to these little cars that only weigh in at 2,800 lbs, to make them MORE enjoyable to run HARD! And they DO run hard! SO many adding supercharger to the base 2.4L cars. Turbo upgrades to the 2.0 cars. V8 swaps (the LS series BOLTS in!) SEVERAL companies doing LS swaps, and even independents. I've seem LS2's and LS7's in these cars, and followed both while driving HARD! The sound of a V8 is SO much sweeter than that of these ring-ding 4-bangers! But pulling 400+hp from a 2L engine is a piece of cake! I'm hoping to have Lucy at 420HP by spring. WHEN this engine blows (will it?) guess what's going in between the frame rails? For the price of a base Vette, you can have your own, one of a kind Kappa car, PURE GM, and run with the big dogs, cuz you weigh less! I'm just waiting for someone to put in this LS9! There's all ready talk of it!

FUN! FUN! FUN! "I COULDA HAD A V8!"
