Sink your right foot to the wood in a new Dodge Viper and — Hello, hyperdrive. Pulling hard in 1st is all about maintaining restraint. Too much gusto and the rear tires lose bite, but get it right and this Snake-Skin Green Viper will distort long-to-short like a carnival mirror. Straight sections of pavement are devoured in voracious gulps and belching exhaust rips. At full lunge, this 600-horsepower monster pummels the senses with thrust and a cacophony of exhaust blat that deafens passengers and onlookers alike. The Viper is all-consuming, compelling and corrupting — look out, Z06.
The introduction was held at beautiful Virginia International Raceway. Members of the press were allowed to lap the north course with little restraint. Back in 1992, the original 400-bhp Viper RT/10 was pegged as a brute. This SRT10 hasn't lost that hairy-knuckled character — going through the kink at VIR's straight isn't supposed to be difficult, but with 600 horses and a theoretically possible 150-mph cornering speed, it surely is.
Before heading onto the track, I sit in queue on pit lane, thinking hard about my mortality and watching others fly into Turn 1 — and, as if on cue, a Venom Red Viper spins in the kink at over 130 mph. All that's seen for 800 feet is a haze of tire smoke. The driver escapes with tires flat-spotted to the cords. I remind myself to concentrate. The Viper, for all its brute force, rewards smoothness with a precision typically reserved for race cars. Lose concentration, even for an instant, and the Viper will bite you.
To thumb their noses at the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, SRT engineers injected the Viper with an extra 90 bhp and 35 lb.-ft. of torque. It's not evident from the exterior, but many drivetrain changes have been made. To meet future emissions requirements, a variable valve timing system was designed that employs a 2-piece camshaft. A hollow camshaft drives the intake valves, while a solid shaft mounted inside it can be rotated independently up to 40 degrees to vary the exhaust timing. This helps optimize valve overlap at low and high engine speeds. While reengineering the block for the cam, the bore was increased by 1 mm, bumping displacement from 8.3 to 8.4 liters.

[b]The cylinder heads have Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-machined combustion chambers and intake ports that result in better-balanced breathing and increased compression. Larger valves and smooth- bore intake runners improve pumping efficiency, while offset rockers improve valve angles. Twin electronic throttles that route air through the longer 2-piece intake tract also give better cylinder distribution. The once-simple valve covers now have plug coils mounted on them, a modern approach that also adds to visual complexity. The bottom end uses a larger oil pump with a swinging pickup, a technology employed on Viper competition engines, that should prevent oil starvation — particularly important now that the car corners even harder than it used to. Pistons use larger-diameter wrist pins and bronze bushings for improved load capacit

2008 Shelby GT500 Super Snake
The modern-day muscle car.

Slideshow: 2008 Shelby GT500 Super Snake >>If a lot is good, then more must be better. At least that's the conclusion I've drawn for the impetus behind Carroll Shelby's latest project, the Super Snake, a 605-bhp after-title conversion of the Mustang Shelby GT500. Boasting 50 more horses than the limited-run GT500 KR (King of the Road), which launches early next year, the Super Snake allows owners of GT500s (yes, the same car that continues to sell over the dealer sticker of $41,930 more than a year after its release) to claim their own share of road kingdom for an additional $28,000. The aftermarket changes to take the GT500 to Super Snake status include a long list of Ford Racing parts, as well as proprietary Shelby bits to build a unique-looking, fully warranted alternative to the 600-bhp Dodge Viper, albeit with some extra weight, a back seat and a live rear axle. If you're not averse to risk-taking, you can go with an even more powerful non-Ford-specified blower with no warranty that will push the Super Snake's 5.4-liter V-8 to 725-plus bhp. The modifications are completed either at Shelby Automobiles' Las Vegas headquarters or the factory-approved modification center at Tasca Ford in Cranston, Rhode Island, and include a new fiberglass hood with functioning scoop, a revamped front fascia with additional brake cooling ducts, carbon-fiber front splitter and rocker panels, a choice of black-riveted C-pillar window closeouts or body-colored side scoops, matte-black striping and larger brakes with front 6-piston calipers developed in conjunction with Baer. The car also benefits from adjustable shocks, stiffer springs, larger-diameter anti-roll bars and a Borla exhaust. Alcoa 20-in. forged alloy wheels are fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires measuring P275/35ZR-20 in the rear and P255/35ZR-20 up front. Inside, there are auxiliary pressure gauges for supercharger boost, fuel and oil mounted atop the instrument panel, the requisite dash plaque with unique serial number and more Shelby and Super Snake emblazoned and embroidered bits than you can shake a stick at.

Overall, the quality of the workmanship is top-notch — this isn't your ordinary dealer-installed dress-up kit. The look, especially in our test car's orange paint scheme with black striping, is strong, upping the macho quotient from the GT500 considerably. The 20-in. wheels fill the flared arches, and the chin spoiler and rocker panels add to the Super Snake's hunkered-down appearance. Even though the Mustang, upon which the Super Snake is based, is a thoroughly modern automobile (okay, it does still have a live rear axle), the effect of Shelby's magic turns the GT500 *** Super Snake into a wayback machine that recalls the glory days of the early 1970s before the muscle car bubble burst. [b]Leave the stereo off, forget the cruise control and the automatic headlamps; the Super Snake is about gobs of power, smoky burnouts and enough steady-state gear wh

The most anticipated launch at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show is Nissan's of the mighty GT-R sports coupe. Promised four years ago by Nissan/Renault chairman Carlos Ghosn, this performance icon is certainly the star of the show, but by no means the only game in town. The Japanese have been at the forefront in developing hot, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedans and hatchbacks. Two other icons in their own right, the Mitsubishi Evo and the Subaru WRX STI will take the stage in all-new guises, while Lexus struts its stuff with the LF-A supercar and the BMW M3-slaying IS-F sports sedan.

Viper SRT10 vs. Corvette Z06
The Rematch: The Dodge Viper is stronger, faster, and looking to take the Corvette Z06 down a peg.
[:-]

Consider the car market as an amusement park. Every vehicle has an analogous ride, from the Tilt-A-Whirl Lotus Elise to the Jungle Cruise Ford Taurus. The Dodge Viper and the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, then, can feel a bit like driving the Raptor. It's an experience not unlike doing motorcycle wheelies on a freeway. In short, driving hard in a car with 500-plus horsepower is not for the fainthearted. The appeal is an addictive mixture of scaring yourself within inches of your life and laughing at how easily you can get away with it. Both the Viper and the Vette have this characteristic in spades.

Video: See 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 vs. 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The last time these two cars met ("Motor City Bullies," December 2005), the Z06 beat the Viper handily on the road, track, and drag strip. Since then, the 505-hp Z06 hasn't changed much, aside from revised rear shocks, although the price has crept skyward. The 2007 Z06 seen here starts at $70,000, but options such as heated seats, a premium stereo, extra sound insulation, chrome wheels, and navigation bring the as-tested total to $77,230. The Viper SRT10, on the other hand, has received a thorough makeover for 2008 in both coupe and roadster form.

The V-10 engine has been bored out an extra 0.6 millimeter to increase the displacement to 8.4 liters. It also gets variable valve timing, new cylinder heads, a new intake, electronic throttle control, hollow intake valves,

113 in my monte, more if the speed limiter was gone, but that will have to wait until I can find out how to get it tuned. 120+ In my dad's '71 Camaro SS with the 350 in it, don't know actual speed, but I was racing a freind and he topped out at 120 and told me that I was still gaining on him.

Anyone besides me got a ticket while in park? The cops mailed it to me. Said I was speeding and they'd been waiting for months for me to make my move. They claim to have pictures of me setting behind the wheel but I know it's a trap to get me to admit I've actually put miles on my '06 Monte. They're not fooling me.
