Fastest American Cars
By DAN LIENERTand SpaceReporter
You know a car is sexy when its manufacturer emphasizes that it can't divulge its customers' names. Granted, Kia and Saturn aren't broadcasting buyers' identities, but super high-end automakers like Rolls-Royce and Ferrari make an especially big stink about confidentiality.

A couple of weeks ago, Florida-based Mosler Automotive delivered its first MT 900S, a $190,000, razor-sharp, street-legal supercar with a Corvette engine and a top speed of over 180 miles per hour.

Click Here to View a Slideshow of Fast American Cars

Mosler put out a press release on the delivery and, sure enough, in the first two paragraphs stated it is "not at liberty to divulge the identity" of the "prominent California filmmaker" who bought the vehicle.

The MT 900S, which has a zero-to-60 time of 3.1 seconds, is an exotic, high-profile vehicle with the kind of performance chops that attract people with millions of dollars at their disposal. Here's proof that the Mosler "walks the walk": It's been available for less than two weeks but is, by our measurements, the sixth-fastest American car on the market.

Why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a car than can go up to 200 mph when most of us don't go above 80 on the highway? For one thing, you can enjoy super-fast cars on dozens of racetracks around the country, and buyers often choose such pure sports cars as Porsches or Corvettes because they plan to use them at amateur racing events and private tracks.

For another thing: bragging rights ... as automotive engineers will tell you, being able to say "my car can do this" means a lot to buyers, even if they never push their cars to the limits. Finally, pulling up to a stoplight in a car like the Mosler makes a statement, and you can show off its blistering acceleration without even reaching 60 mph.

We've compiled a list of the 10 speediest, street-legal American cars of which private owners can take delivery. Unsurprisingly, the fastest cars made in the U.S. are also among the most expensive, such as Saleen's $555,000 S7 Twin Turbo supercar, which has an estimated top speed of 240 to 260 mph.

Several new models have made the list al

Driving at high speeds certainly helps make a trip go faster; just ask any driver who has gone "flat out" on the German Autobahn. However with the exception of events like the Silver State Classic's Open Road Rally or a driver's school on a racetrack, it's difficult to find a place that allows unlimited speeds! Remember, the tires on the vehicle should be properly sized, inflated and inspected if you plan to drive fast because the tires will be subjected to tremendous stresses.
Because of the weight they bear, pneumatic tires' sidewalls bulge and their treads flatten as they roll into contact with the road. This results in dimensional difference between the tire's "unloaded" radius (i.e., between the center of the axle and the top of the tire) and its "loaded" radius (between the center of the axle and the road). The engineer's call the difference between the two radii "deflection." Increasing vehicle speed will cause the tires to deflect quicker and increasing vehicle load will cause the tires to deflect farther (if tire pressure isn't increased).
Consider that a 225/45R17 91W Standard Load tire (with a 25-inch overall diameter) will roll about 835 times every mile. Although the number of tire revolutions per mile doesn't change significantly as speed climbs, the revolutions per second become daunting. While the 225/45R17 91W-sized tire rolls a rather comfortable 7 times per second at 30 mph, this same tire will roll about 16 times per second at 70 mph on an American Interstate and an amazing 35 times per second during a 150 mph cruise on the German Autobahn. Thirty-five tire revolutions per second means that the tire is transforming from its unloaded to loaded shape and back every 3/100th of a second.
The European Tyre and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) establishes the standards for tires sold in Europe, and recognizes that the tire's deflection must be minimized and controlled in order to surpass high speed driving stresses. In order to accomplish this, the tire inflation pressure recommendations and the tire's rated load capacities are customized when speeds exceed 160 km/h (99 mph) for all tires up to and including a V-speed rating, and when speeds exceed 190 km/h (118 mph) for all tires that are Z-speed rated and above.
The Autobahn's unlimited speed opportunities explain why many German vehicles identify alternate tire inflation pressures to accommodate higher than North American highway speeds and heavier than typical two-passenger loads. In order to accommodate higher speeds, the tire size and inflation pressure recommendations are tuned beyond what is branded on the tire's sidewalls. These increases in recommended tire pressure are usually determined by agreement between the vehicle and tire manufacturers. In the absence of such an agreement, apply the following:
Beginning with the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure for normal highway conditions, tire inflation pressures are initially increased and then the tire's rated load capacities (branded on the sidewalls) are reduced as speeds climb.
[b]In our example shown below, the vehicle manufacturer's recommended 35 psi for a 225/45R17 91W Standard Load tire installed on a vehicle initially rises in 1.5 psi increments for every 10 km/h (6.2 mph) increase in speed until the inflation pressures max out with an increase of 7.5 psi when the veh

Removing Top Speed Limiter
As for removing the speed limiter, I highly doubt the dealer is willing to help you out with this one. I actually just completed the task last week. It's not too difficult to do yourself as long as you have the ability toramp or lift the front of your car up enough to get to the transmission. Here's the procedure. First you must disconnect two sensors (presumably RPM limiters?) from the tranny. One is the fourth gear sensor, while the other is the fifth gear sensor. If you look at the transmission under the car there are supposedly four (4) sensors (I only saw three, but the fourth one is somewhere under there), the ones that need to be disconnected are the middle two (2). The electrical connections are simple snap lock configured so not cutting is required. Once the two connections are disconnected, I recommend you thoroughly tape over the ends of the connectors to prevent moisture from entering within.

By doing this step the ECU doesn't know your 4th or 5th gear RPMs, therefore it won't limit you. Note: If you have faith in placing your car on jack stands (some members have done this) you can test the limiter for each gear before and after each step. What you'll find is that the ECU limits the top end RPM for 4th and 5th gear before you disconnect anything. Afterwards, the skies the limit.

The last step is to disconnect a control wire that comes from the tranny area and passes by the passenger side of the starter in the engine compartment. You'll find another simple electrical connection (looks like a tube style fuse holder) with small gauge wire. Unhook this connection and then drive your car and you'll notice the speedometer doesn't work, nor do the number onyour odometer change. What you've disconnected is the sensor that transmits the speed to the ECU and the display. Now the computer tries to watch your speed to make sure you don't go past 115mph (S13 model, S14 may vary higher), but never cuts off your fuel since it doesn't have a clue how fast you're traveling.

Since most of us don't cruise over 115mph you may want to wire a switch into the speedo connection just mentioned. I used a simple red rocker switch and installed it into the blank

That tacholink device is probably close to the controls the UPS trucks have. I know the larger center in Columbus, OH can monitor how longavehicle has been idling and can shut it down.

You would think with this control, they'd know WHERE their tractors are located? We had one of them for close to twoweeks back in may.
